I asked a question before about if all police officers have a badge number / id, and if you request are they required to give that information to you?
I figured I'd give a little more information:
Here is the context - I was standing on the sidewalk with my friend talking, I had a bottle of WATER in my hand. A police officer (several actually) approached me. This was on a friday night in a college town, so the officer assumed it was alcohol. He was rather rude to me, even though I was sober and it was just water. Obviously I wasn't charged with anything, at the end I asked for his badge number and he declined, I requested it again but he declined a second time. He would only show me his name tag.

Officers are required to give you their badge numbers. If for no other reason than to prove that they are real police officers. Lodge a complaint at your local police department. The police work for the taxpayers not the other way around. So in a round about manner - your their boss and you deserve to make sure that they are treating everyone with respect. Sometimes the powers that be forget that they are there to Protect and Serve not to Harass and Bully/ |

If you were arrested it would be something nice to know for your trial. However, since you were simply questioned to satisfy the officer's desire to know if you were publicly intoxicated, then no legal action was taken.
But to answer your question. Some police departments have badge numbers which are logged specifically to each officer. Others have badges with numbers that they do not log nor keep records of. Some have numbers that the officers memorize as their identifying number but it is not placed on badges, etc.
Furthermore, unless the departments policy states that the officer is required to give you his badge number when requested, he is under no obligation to.
If you are going to write a nasty letter filled with hyperbole to the department the name tag he showed you is probably of more value to you than any badge number. |
