Police Officers. Do they get arrogance training or does it just come naturally?

Police Officers. Do they get arrogance training or does it just come naturally?
|
Being assertive is one thing and is necessary for the job but arrogance is just rude. Why do the majority think that they are further up the evolutionary ladder than the rest of us? Additional Details The main reason i ask it that despite some of you "ASSUMING" that i was in trouble, i did in fact merely pull up alongside a Police Officer in some traffic and both our windows were down and i said "excuse me mate could you tell me where the train station is"? and he replied "I dont work for a plumber and im not your friend.......you find it " and then he drove off. I have NEVER been in any trouble but the Police just expect you to be a problem the moment you approach them. Oh and by the way we are all entitled to opinions but personal insults are uncalled for, and show a degree of ignorance, arrogance and a low level of intelligence.

hellooo!! can anybody help me?
 |
its just their way of telling you that they're not interested.
i have only ever asked the for police assistance 3 times in my life and it didn't arrive at all.
Once anoperator had the nerve to tell me that if i dealt with the idiots outside my house then i would be arrested.
One copper told me after i'd been attacked that i should have got my punches in in the club as they won't be able to prosecute because of fuzzy cctv!!
so not only will they not do their jobs but they don't let you look after yourself!! |

Do you have any idea what those "arrogant" people go through? Here's an eye opener for you:
LIFE AS A POLICE OFFICER
Well, Mr. Citizen, it seems you've figured me out. I fit neatly into the category where you've placed me. I'm stereotyped, standardized, characterized, classified, grouped, and always typical. Unfortunately, the reverse is true. I can never figure you out.
From birth, you teach your children that I'm the bogeyman, if they do anything bad I'll take them away. Then you're shocked when they identify/associate with my traditional enemy... the criminal! You accuse me of going too easy on criminals until I catch your kids doing wrong. You may take an hour for lunch and several coffee breaks each day, but point me out as lazy for having one cup. You pride yourself on your manners, but think nothing of disrupting my meals with your troubles.
You go mental with the guy who cuts you off in traffic, but let me catch you doing the same thing and I'm picking on you. You know all the traffic laws...but you've never gotten a single ticket you deserve. You shout "IDIOT" if you observe me driving fast to a call, but raise the roof if I take more than ten seconds to respond to your complaint.
You call it part of my job if someone strikes me, but call it police brutality if I strike back. You wouldn't think of telling your dentist how to pull a tooth or your doctor how to take out an appendix, yet you are always willing to give me pointers on the law and telling me how to do my job.
You talk to me in a manner that would get you a bloody nose from anyone else, but expect me to take it without batting an eye.
You yell that something's got to be done to fight crime, but you can't be bothered to get involved.
You have no use for me at all, but of course it's OK if I change a flat for your wife, deliver your child in the back of the patrol car, or perhaps save your son's life with mouth to mouth breathing, or work many hours overtime looking for your lost daughter.
So Mr. Citizen, you can stand there on your soapbox and rant and rave about the way I do my work, calling me every name in the book, but never stop to think that your property, family, or maybe even your life depends on me or one of my buddies.
Yes, Mr. Citizen, it's me the cop!
The Author of this article was Trooper Mitchell Brown of the Virginia State Police. He was killed in the line of duty two months after writing the article...... |

Just pay the ticket and don't get your shorts in a bunch when a guy's just doing his job! Remember, these men and women are risking their very lives everytime they go on patrol. I think we can all cut them a little slack in the bedside manners department! |

Officers are taught to be loud and direct, so there is less of a chance their orders are mistaken.
When the persons he is speaking to are under stress, a condition called "auditory exclusion" can exist. You need to have a loud commanding voice to get through to some people.
A police officer can not do his job if he is not in control of a situation. I think you are partially correct here, and that assertivness and confidence are mistaken for arrogance. "Pretty please" does not go far when trying to break up a bar fight.
I think if I asked you to give a specific example, it would include some type of argument or challenge on the citizens part just before the officer acts "arrogant". |

Because people are stupid and act stupid when it comes to cops and laws. People see to many TV shows and think they can demand certain things, and that their call is more important than others.
Yes, cops can be rude, but sometimes it's necessary to get their message across. How many times should something have to be explained before the person stops asking the question. Here are some examples.
I answered the phone at work one day and the person, sounded like an adult, asked me what state the Grand Canyon was in. Now, why would you call the police department to ask this question?
Several 9-1-1 calls from people asking for directions. Honestly?
The agency I work for does not provide vehicle lock out services in non-emergency situations. So, a lady calls in and asks if we can help her. I tell her we cannot. She then asks (no lie) 5 "what if" scenarios. Again, she is told every time our policy. She then attempts to argue that since we don't unlock cars that we would not respond to a robbery at the gas station she was calling from? Honestly, a robbery and being stupid are 2 different things.
So, we have to be rude at times because people just don't want to listen to what police say the firs time. If you think someone is rude to you, feel free to file a complaint. |

In the Police Academy, a "We versus them" attitude is ingrained into the cadets. This attitude is often taught after the academy as well. Initial field training often instills to a new cop to not trust anyone and only rely on yourself or other cops. Thank goodness that most cops are even keeled and don't go looking for a fight. Of course cops are notoriously worse in the big cities. This is because they often go into a police force which is overworked and under appreciated and often their members feel like the fight they are fighting is a hopeless cause. This can lead to police officers treating average citizens like they are criminals. |

What is the difference between a police officer and a toilet?
A toilet only has to deal with one ar$ehole at a time. |

As with all things you have good cops and bad cops. Most cops I have known(a lot through the military and other vol. functions I have done) are great people, who have a very difficult job. There are some out there though that have taken the job specifically for the power and respect the position garners.
I think that smaller towns you see a lot more of the bad cop syndrome really, because the politics of the area play into the police force much more then in a larger city. You will see bad cops there too because of the number of officers they are forced to hire.
I think though for the most part these are men and women who took this job with the hopes of making a difference in the community. Most try very hard to be fair, and polite, but at the same time they must show a mildly aggressive assertiveness because many situations demand that they react very quickly to in some cases save their own life or the life of others. |

you need to join the academy whenever you turn 21 and if you are lucky, you'll make it on the streets, then you'll see why police officers are tough characters. Otherwise, stop hating |

I do hear what your saying... However, do you go to every call. I know that I would act different with your mom, dad, grandmother, grandfather, etc. I do this everyday. Our attitude is a reflection of the people that we deal with. I admit I MF people. I work in a town of 100,000 people jst south of Chicago. I get drugs and have found gguns. I deal with docummented gang members. I deal with "known" drug users. I go at these people the way they come at me. It is what they understand. I would never MF a little old lady or soemone at a death investigation whos family member just died. An elderly person doesn't understand what slang or many "curse" words are anyway. It wouldn't work to well to drop F bombs at a runaway child call. Some things just don't work. Maybe you are always around in the wrong context or around at the wrong place or time. I don't know if you call that attitude arrogance or not. I do like how you do address assertive...Not being assertive can get you hurt, or killed. |

Majority?
Just how many have you met to justify that claim? There are over 140,000 people employed as police officers in the UK alone.
Why then despite my ever present civility and courtesy towards the people I deal with is it not always reciprocated and people think they can be abusive and insulting towards me simply on the basis of my job.
Even worse, form prejudicial opinions of me, proclaim me as being arrogant and rude having never met me simply on the basis of my job. A sad reflection on them maybe. |

Arrogance is just rude like you say but i dont believe the majority of them are. The ones i have come across deserve credit because they are doing a tough job. |

It comes from dealing with lots of people who are going to night school just to evolve a thumb.
Plus you have to be able to assert yourself when dealing with people who think they are mental giants. |

My boyfriend is a cop and is by no means arrogant. He is assertive and gets the job done. He may have a "I'm better than you" attitude towards criminals, but so should every other law abiding citizen. I imagine there are some that are a bit arrogant but that's fine by me. I stay on the right side of the law so this "arrogance" does not affect me. We have police officers at our house all the time and let me tell you, they are about the funnest group of guys I've ever hung out with. Even if they were arrogant they are still human. |

First of all I do not look down on anyone. I am working class.
I tend to treat people how I find them.
Maybe the way you are with officers reflects how they are with you. |

It is part and parcel of being one.
I know because I am also married to one and my father was one.
It is a trait all of them have....... guess he helps them keep their emotions hidden.
But really I don't know why........it is just what it is....and it comes naturally.
And when it comes to going out....they all go out with other cops, dinner -cops -house parties COPS... the dances-COPS
COPS cops COPS.. it is their world...
Ok my rant is done thanks for letting me vent on this topic.
Have a great day. |

They are allowed a certain latitude. Not everybody is just an average citizen, there are people who are very dangerous and they look like an average citizen. Don't take it personally, its part of being tactically safe. |

I think they just have their defences up because of all the low lives they have to deal with. I have unfortunately had a lot of dealings with them through some harrassment and stalking and I truly cannot fault the people that are dealing with it. In fact a lot of the time they have gone over and above the call of duty. From my experience they do not deserve the bad press they get. |

There was a programme on TV last night (Monday) as part of the remembrance theme.
And an ex-WWII veteran who joined the police after the war, said he was glad he was not in the police force of today, because he found them arrogant, unhelpful and they only looked out for themselves.
Says it all really. |
