Police Safety Cameras?

Police Safety Cameras?

Did I hear right the other night on the T.V when a Traffic Policeman with a safety camera was targetting speeding motorists on a 40MPH road, stated that the allowance was 40 + 10% + 4 MPH was allowed so until you were doing 49MPH you were okay? This was to allow the camera some discrepancy.

10% of 40 is 4. So I think they meant 40 + 10% = 44
49 would be +20%
I would think the camera would need to be calibrated very accurately if it is to be used as evidence. However a speedometer could be out by 10% depending on the temperature and tyre inflation etc. So the 10% is to allow the motorist some leeway in making an informed decision.

Yes but it is better to keep to speed limit, on motorways it 10%of 70 plus 2=79

Police forces generally follow ACPO guidelines which recommend a tolerance of 10% + 2mph before considering prosecution. However that's not obligatory and some force areas allow no tolerance at all - N Wales for one. Looks like that area just allows a slightly larger tolerance on its cameras.

That's probably true. In many cases I expect the police are embarrassed to prosecute drivers at such low speeds we have as limits in this country.
