Police force questions?

My boyfriend wants to become a police officer. Well, he'd like to work as traffic police. A website says that the only area recruiting is London Metropolitan but that's hours away from where he lives. basically, do you have to apply online..then you get through to your training. Or can you train first then apply for a PC job? II've read about voulenteering and placement? Could this be instead of applying? I don't get what this is for.. Also, do you have to be a PC to then go onto traffic police. And finally, what is the pay like? I know it starts at 20,000. But how often does it go up and how long can it take till you're able to apply for a job higher up (sargent i think?? )

Personally i wouldn't serve in the Met, i would advise him to wait until a vacancy/recruitment drive is taking place in his area.

Traffic police is classed as a "specialist area" and requires officers to be "pursuit trained". Trained to handle cars at high speeds in the safest manner possible, when a chase gets too dangerous or involved motorway pursuit it is then the traffic police tend to get called in, usually driving high performance BMW's/ Skodas/ Volvos.

To join traffic police you first need to train as a PC and successfully complete a 2 year probationary period, it is after the probationary period you are given options such as applying for "CID" (Criminal Investigation Department), C019 (Armed police), Traffic, Underwater search team specialist, Dog handler and so on ...

Alot of questions here if he is asking the same then alot more research needs to be done by him or its vital he attends a recruitment fair/event to ask these sort of things.

Firstly if the met is the only force applying he has to wait, if is going to apply to them then that means attending a recruitment event/fair because the met only give out applications at there events/fairs....once he has filled that in if he is successful, then he has to pass a assessment and medical test..all this take about 3-6 months, if he passes then he will start training in which he is paid to do so....he has to start as a ordinary police officer for two years(probation period) before he can go to a specialist department like Traffic..20k pay is basic with allowances..shift allowances and London waiting his take home will be 25k a year...as for sgt role realistically 3-5 years but there are alot of exams for that and the role is about managing a team and lots of paperwork..not for the light hearted.

The volunteering bit you mention is the special constabulary, they are volunteer police officers ( i am one myself and have been for 3 years), you have the same powers and equipment as full time police officers but specials dont get paid apart from travel allowance and expenses, you go out on patrol on your own time or days off...being a special does not give you automatic placements in the police force...if i want to became a full time police officer i have to apply and go through the assessments like anyone else..i dont get any advantages or privileges over other candidates.

There is alot to learn and consider before he should decide on a career as a police officer like shift work, 24/7 day a week pattern and working bank holidays...working your birthday because he cannot get the day off because they are short or someone else on his shift has already booked that day off...i work for the police as a civilian as well and i work shifts..and i tell you what its not easy to manage work and a relationship on shift work.. I suggest he should attend a recruitment fair to see if its the right career for him.
