Find answers to your legal question.

Police left me to walk 5miles in the middle of the night - cruel or kind?

im asking because a couple of weeks ago, i was with a group of friends when this group of chavs came up to us, threatened us, stole our bags and tried to attack us.
When we called the police, they stopped taking us seriously because they presumed we drunk. anyway, they said that they would take me and someone else home. ( it was at midnight and we'd missed the buses because of all this)
they questioned us, said they would get back to us in the morning and just left.
im 15 and those coppers left me to walk home 5 miles, at midnight.
i thought they were meant to PROTECT US?! not leave us in a time of need.
your thoughts people

by the way, i wasnt drinking. thats my point, they presumed i was when i was completely sober.
and also, yes, it was past my curfew, i had to stay out because the police took half an hour to get there, then atleast 45 minutes questioning us. it wasnt my fault i was still there.

Thats the police all over.
They only care about figures these days, so if they arnt getting an easy quick arrest to bump up their scores then they really couldn't care less.
I've known similar stories to yours, both friends and personally.

Captain Sarcasm
I strongly suspect there is more to this than meets the eye however if we accept everything you say without hearing the Police Officers reply this posting still begs several questions.

1) You chose to be walking 5 miles home before the attack ,so you would have had to walk home regardless of the Police involvement.

2) If you are old enough to be out at that time of night why should the Police give you a free taxi home? (Yes I know you say they delayed you but you were out late at night before the attack anyway, what difference does 45 minutes make?)

3) Why were you out at that time of night at 15 years of age?

4) You called the Police, so you had access to a phone. Why did you not also call an adult family member for help? If you felt vulnerable why not phone a parent to collect you?

5) If you couldn't phone a family member, why didn't you call a taxi and get money to pay for it when you arrived home?

The Police are there to protect you but they are not a free taxi service. I suspect there is much more to this than you are posting on here but if there is not then you need to grow up and learn a lesson from this. You need to learn that if you want to act like an adult by being out late at night then with that comes adult responsibilities and adult consequences. So you need to take sensible safety precautions, you need to make adult decisions when things go wrong, you need to learn that you have to accept personal responsibility when things go wrong and that as an adult you have to solve problems yourself.

In simple terms if you want to behave like an adult and are out on the streets late at night you can not then revert to the vulnerable complaining juvenile.

they are the police not a taxi for 15 year old on a night out who should not be out drinking !!

if you were out that late anyway - curfew or not, then why is it automatically the Polices obligation to take you home? they are not a taxi service, and nor is it the polices fault that you got into that situation.

If you have a curfew, then really it should have been upto your parents to come and pick you up?

Bear
If the police presumed you were drinking then I prefer to believe them than you. I dare say the whole thing was an elaborate story because you thought that you might breach your curfew.

What were you doing out drinking at midnight, particularly when you were on a curfew.

The police are not a taxi service!!

woznotwoz
Why didn't your parents collect you. If you were my son or daughter I would be out like a shot going to collect you.

Mind you, my son or daughter wouldn't be out on the street drinking gone 11 at night in the first place!

Are you male or female? how many wanted lifts home? what country were you in? Sometimes, taking females home could get the officers who could of been male in serious trouble ( as some girls have on being transported home have cried rape ) think of that? also was you alone and did you walk alone? They would protect you, yes, with there lives sometimes! who's fault is it that you missed the buses the police!? police vehicles are not an another form of transport and give members of the public the right or entitled lifts home! But they would do everything they can to investigate the theft of property as the youths have committed robbery! they should of taken ur details and they will be in touch...how do I know all this..guess!...so to your answer cruel or kind? ...I think fair and justified ( you wasnt attacked, injured from these youths )...and besides walking is a great form of exercise!

The protection the police offer, unfortunately, does not cover a taxi service as well.

If it was the police who made you miss your bus however then they should have given you a lift home. Especially as you are a 15 year old girl.

I think you should have your parents put in a complaint as this was far from ok, in fact they left you in danger as you are still only a child in the eyes of the law. They should have ensured that you were safe and leaving you to walk a dark road at midnight was far from safe, I know you have said you were not drunk but even if you had been they should still have taken you home. You were a child in trouble, 5 miles away from home with no money and no way to contact anyone to say you were ok or to come and pick you up. At the very least they should have either contacted your parents and stayed with you until you were collected or taken you to the police station in order for someone to have collected you there, what they did was not just cruel, it was wrong and dangerous.

It was a bit irresponsible for them to leave you to make your own way home, but surely you could have phoned your parents to collect you. Perhaps the Police didn't believe what you were telling them and thought you were making excuses for being out late.

Umm, yes the officers should deal/have dealt with the allegation of the theft/robbery however...

Why did your parents or a older brother/sister not bother to come and pick you up.

If your 15 and scared of being out at night so late then why go out till midnight.

Your responsible for your own safety as are your relatives.

Dont blame the police for you being out late in a area you were not comfortable in, take some responsiblity for your own actions, you are a young adult who can think for yourself now.

Never be late for home.
If we missed the bus home.

You shouldn't be out drinking at night at your age. You're just asking to get attacked..
File a complaint? what do we know?

Personally, i feel this is extremely irresponsible on their part.
For an example, they may have been called out again that night because you had been stabbed, kidnapped or worse.
I feel quite strongly that-that shouldn't be tolerated as they are all about keeping people safe.

I know this may seem far-fetched, but you could do with at least talking to an adult at school whom you trust and see what they think.

sweetie
thats out of order

Some places have a curfue so maybe he was being kind and not forcing you to have to go home and him have to issue a citation. Of maybe he thought you needed the excerise. Hahaha

REPORT THEM!

lone butcher Spartan remembers
Midnight is probably past your curfew so they probably should have taken you home. .
But there's nothing wrong with a short 5 mile walk, kid. It's just 5 miles.
Kinda mean but not really bad.

Mr. Goodhi
It's irresponsible of them.

Chelceii
Straight up cruel, and not only that, irresponsible.
