My last ten years on the job, I averaged around $80,000 a year between work, and overtime. Some years were higher, some were lower.

Well, it depends on where you are and what your rank is. I would say that most start out around 30,000-40,000. Some areas where the cost of living is higher start our higher, where the cost of living is lower they start out lower. If you are interested in a particular agency, see if you can do a ride along with them. Talk to a few of the officers and ask them how happy they are, if overtime is available on a regular basis, etc. Look around at several agencies before you decide. And ignore the other people who tell you the negative comments. I am married to a trooper. We have a wonderful relationship. He isn't a power hungry corrupt person and neither are any of his co-workers that I know. It is a noble profession, albeit thankless at times.

It depends on the agency you work for. Some agencies pay better then others. Also the more experience, rank, longevity, etc. you have the more you make.

In the Dallas Fort Worth Area, most officers start from 45-52,000. Some departments have them at 68,000 after just 3 years.

It all depends on how long they have been on the force. My father in law was on the force for 28 years and was chief for 10 of those and was making quite a bit. He now has quite a generous pension plan that he maxed out.

nah, police officers don't really make that great of money, decent, but not great, I know 4 a fact, alaska has the highest paid officers in the US, and they make about 60K a year here, compared to the lower 48, which is like 24 to 30k per year.
I see adds in the paper here, starting at 18.64 an hour,
Im a bouncer and I make 14, and I just sit in a club.

its like teachers, they have an important job, but are greatly under paid.
more overtime means more taxes taken out also.

"good" is a comparison between what they make NOT doing overtime.

If you get $1/hour and on overtime you get $2 - you tend to be enthusiastic about overtime!

That being said, police are chronically underpaid, underappreciated, overstressed and highly susceptible to divorce, suicide and poor medical care.

There is no such thing as a police officer! They are bullies in a uniform and are WAY, WAY OVERPAID!
