what are all the ranking in police?
is going from Sergent to lieutenant a promotion or demotion?

Lieutenant is the next promotion above sergeant.
There are several ranks used in law enforcement. The ranks themselves are consistent, but not all departments use them all. Below is a listing of ranks I'm familiar with, the ones in (parentheses) are less common, and are not used on all departments.
Police Officer
(Corporal)
Sergeant
Lieutenant
Captain
(Major)
Commander
Assistant Chief
Chief
The detective division may assign similar ranks, or they may use different ones such as Investigator, Detective, Inspector. |

Obviously you are from the US, but just for comparision sake, in Canada, the ranks go like this from the bottom to the top (not all departments use all positions, some places have additions positions such as Sgt. Major or Chief Superintendant, depending on the size)
Constable
Corporal
Sergeant
Staff Sergeant
Inspector
Super Intendant
Deputy Chief
Chief
Detective is not a rank. A constable usually attains a Det. rank when placed in a specialized section. |
