OMG that is ridiculous! See, if someone had jumped in my backyard I would have shot them, cop or not when surprised. The dog was doing its job, protecting the home. YES, sue that sorry police department and tell them to stay out of peoples yards or they might get shot next. I would also take this to any type of news whether it be the paper, tv or both. That cop had to be ignorant to not be able to tell a suspect from a freakin dog!

Just so you know, a few years back, a person was pulled over by a state trooper. To make a long story short, he was asked to get out of the car, and he did. His dog got out too but was caught on camera approaching the cop wagging his tail. The cop shot and killed him. Yes, the guy sued and he got money and an apology. How much money was not stated and I am sure the apology was forced.

Guess with all the thumbs down there are a bunch of dog haters out there that think police have all authority. NOT in my backyard do they.

The city of Costa Mesa (California) shelled out $225,000 to a family whose dog was shot by a cop.

A cop hopped a fence to try finding a couple of teenagers. The cop encountered a dog, and fired.

The offense the teenagers committed for which the officer felt was serious enough to warrant hopping the fence to arrest the teenagers: Riding a bicycle without a helmet.

The city didn't even bother going to court to defend the cop's actions.

In order to sue the department, you would have to prove the officers were negligent. No police officer wants to shoot a dog, but they are not going to allow themselves to be attacked either. As long as their actions were reasonable, a lawsuit will go nowhere.

The other option would be for them to leave the criminal in your back yard. Now that would have been negligent.

I think they should be sude and jailed for murder. so many cops commit police brutality and murder and let criminals get away with crimes and even shoot people and animals when they have done nothing. in atlanta there was a elderly woman minding her own business when cops busted down the door and started shooting like crazy people. they aren't getting jailed for life either like a civilian would. i think thats wrong that the law enforcers are the law breakers and also get away with lying.

If you don't have proof that the officer was out of line.. I'm doubting you'll get anything outside of an apology and a new dog out of pure regret from the force.. I don't see how sueing the police for essentially doing his/her job, is going to get anywhere..

First of all, a question for ICE. Would you be the first to sue if the police allowed a criminal to take refuge in his yard?

Now a question for you... if this is such a tragedy, why are you not talking about your emotional attachment to the dog? All you are looking for is free money, and I find that disturbing. You don't deserve another dog.

Yeah, I can see that the officer felt in danger and shot the dog etc but damn, come in my yard and shoot my dog and I'll shoot you back, uniform or not.

Sue them and go public until they sort it out properly.

You can sue the P.D. and demand an apology.
It has been done many times here in So. Cal. and the owners of the Dog have won.

What would you expect from those ignorant bully cops. They are beating up and keep killing pregnant women, teen age kids and senior citizens. Sue those ugly m.f. for every cent they have.

it seems to be more to the story... ,no policeman would shoot a dog without getting attack ,if he got attack you should had done something about it ...

just go the police station and talk with the policeman that shoot your dog if he refuses talk with his superior, what with people suing ...nowadays how bout straight talk.
