My girlfriend has just joined the police force, and every night she comes home and tell me how good the training is. Its not just a mans job, and Im sure there are aspects where men will excel and aspects where women will excel. |

Scaling roofs, jumping fences, high speed car chases and a big rough and tumble to catch your suspect. Iv done it and caught many nasty people alot bigger than me. Women are taught the same OST moves as men...we are all equal. |

good question - and rather brave of you ask it, if I may say so! My answer to you is that the job description of a police officer is so wide, then the police must be made up of all sorts of people. It is not, in my opinion, a male female issue. I have seen some women better at riot policing than some men. This is not the norm however. I have equally seen some men better at calming situations and connecting with people than some women. This is also not the norm. Individuals are all different and they all bring something different to the job.
Physical strength is undoubtedly a big part of the fundamental type of policing (which is what I think you mean by keeping our streets safe) but thinking on your feet and connecting with the individuals you deal with is invaluable. Everyone who does the job takes their strengths and weaknesses with them and must adapt their responses accordingly.
In all honesty, you could manage with a police force (service??!) fully staffed with men, but it just wouldnt work in my experience with only women. So, in actual fact my answer, unpopular tho it is going to be, is yes, women can do the job as long as there are plenty of men there too....... |

Yes.
But not all women, and not all men, can do the job.
It takes someone that can think on their feet, above average intelligence, and the ability to compensate technique for brawn.
We are not paid to fight or throw our weight around. We are paid to keep the peace. If you want to fight, we will subdue you with the minimum force necessary. If you have to go to the hospital before going to jail, then hey, maybe you should just cooperate.
The weapons are not for show. They are for morons that fail to obey lawful commands. |

Yes, women, as a rule may not be built as large as men, but can calm a conflict easier by "talking down" a hostile situation and speaking sense to the perp. |

The number of women police officers is on the rise in the majority of US states. And the women are able to do it just as well if not in some cases better. But it's not the police who we should look to, for the Primary safety of ourselves and our family. Instead we should make ourself the primary and the police the secondary. The police can't be everywhere at one time so everyone should make it their responsibility to protect themselves and not whine when they become the victim of a crime because the police weren't there when it happened. |

Yeah why not? Women are just as good as men. I don't understand why people are so gender biased. |

Why shouldn't they? criminals can be women so why shouldn't police be women as well, it doesn't mean that it is unladylike does it ? |

Coming from a guy in the police academy.
Yes. Women can very the job well. They may escalate their use of force in order to do their job though.
For example: If it were me vs. another guy I would get in a struggle and win. But if you are a little girl police officer then at first signs you are losing you may be justified in shooting him. Remember if the female officer goes unconscious then her weapon is available and that is unacceptable. She may have to use more force. |
