Punishing crime?

Punishing crime?

Wondered if i get some ideas for an essay on crime

What do you think are the problems with punishing criminals today?

Main problem: Jail time does not rehabilitate. Please understand that I am NOT saying that we should keep people in prison for their entire lives; I am just saying that criminals need counseling to work out there problems so that they won't re-offend.

Prison is like a holiday camp.

People in prison shouldn't have any rights beyond food and drink and medical.

Prisons are nothing more than warehouses for offenders where the law of the jungle prevails. I worked for four years in a maximum security prison, rehabilitation is a joke. In the state where I worked there was a saying among the prisoners "there are three ways to survive in prison fight, f**k, or bust a sixty." The first two are self explanatory, The third refers to the ability of inmates in this particular state to spend a maximum of sixty dollars every two weeks on commissary if they are fortunate enough to have some one on the outside who provide funds for the inmates commissary account. These purchases are then paid out in protection which is seen as weakness and is eventually exploited in a most unsavory manner. So ask yourself is such a system the solution. Make no mistake there are many incarcerated in this country who should never see the light of day again, but there are many more who are broken and ruined for having made a foolish choice.

Punish them too hard and they rebel. The soviets tried it and had to, rountinely, let everyone out of their prisons/goals..... it just crushes the decent people and let's crime bosses fluourish.

Why do they give time off for good behaviour? They're in prison; they are supposed to be good aren't they? How about putting time on for bad behaviour, now wouldn't that keep them in order? It has always seemed crazy to me that a convicted criminal who is sentenced to say - 10 years will get a third of for good behaviour, then time on parole so will likely end up only serving 4 years!

I believe that criminals get away with too much too often. I also believe that silly lawsuits in civil courts wreck criminal prosecutions.

Writing from the UK, can anyone here in this our land, remember when a sentence passed down by our legal judges, was sufficient enough to fit the crime committed
.The law for the criminal fraternity is lax, more attention is given to the rights of the person committing the crimes, than the victims. What do we hear so many times " prisoner is given a life sentence he will serve,no less than so many years
"what is that all about? <life should be life> if not, why is it passed down as a life sentence?

Repeat offenders show that something needs to be done to deter them than return them.
I think there really has to be a better way to make people want to better themselves.

penalties aren't harsh enough. When someone gets 25 years they should do 25 years not 10 years then appeal.
Also I think death penalty for serious crimes like kiddy fiddling etc.

Political interference and the erosion of judicial independence.

Thatcher found that she could win votes by ensuring that a fearful public believed that her establishment would be the toughest on crime. Since then there's not been a government or oppositioin that hasn't done it's best to make the populace fearful while also claiming to hold the solution.

As long as that remains the case the public will be kept in fear and the criminal justice system wil be under perpetual reform.

This is actually a great and easy topic.
I was watching a television show earlier on CNN from back in 1988 when this guy accidently shot his son and raced him to the E.R only his son died. Then he freaked out and ran back to the house where he was arrested. He apparently had a jail key on him and broke lose of the hand cuffs and shot the two officers then was in a stand off for like 5 hours but piont of the story it that...
THE MANS WIFE...was arrested for her husbands murders because he killed him self. HOWEVER she had NOTHING to do with ANY of the murders and she is in jail for 21 years now.
