Question about doctors and police officers' profession...?

why do doctors charge high to save a life and cops do it for free?

for example, my grandma is dying in a coma then the pulmo doctor charges very very high.....and the hospital won;t let her out and the credits constantly bug us evryday for the bill...and if you are in an emergency situation and needed an operation, if you don;t have money, they won;t operate...

while if you're a cop, or an officer or official, and for example someone's kid gets kidnapped, you find the suspects and do it for free and even get complains from the victims...

why is it that way?...should doctors treat their jobs like public servants???? or are they just curing people because of the money?

or are we screwed?
Additional Details
i mean not just the the pulmo, but also the neurologist, and etc...

1. Police officers do not work for free, they are paid by the city/state they work for. Do they get paid what they deserve, probably not but then...most people dont.

2. The physicians do have high costs themselves. If they have specialized they have spent thousands upon thousands of dollars and hours learning their craft. They have very high malpractice insurance and also typically have to pay THEIR staff in their offices. It is not simply they are charging "X" dollars and pocketing it. You might be suprised how much of "X" actually gets to their pocket.

3. You failed to mention the rest of the hospital staff who all attend a patient. They get paid as well, generally a base salary, depending upon their job.

Doctors have to charge a lot because of the risks it takes to be a doctor. They have your life in their hands every day, and they have to pay tons of money to have insurance, equipment, pay their staff, etc. They also paid lots of money for their schooling. More education = more pay. That is also why a surgeon would charge more than say just a family doctor. The more complicated the problem, the more specialized the doctor, the more schooling he took, which means he gets to charge more money.

And I don't know where you live, but in the United States it is illegal for a doctor or hospital to deny you health care just because you don't have money. If your specific doctor or hospital does not wish to treat you due to your financial situation, they are legally obligated to transfer you to a facility that will treat you. That is why there are county hospitals.

Police officers do not work for free. Your tax money pays their salaries. They do not have to charge you for their services each time because they are employed by the government. The government pays all expenses by collecting money from tax payers. Police officers make less than doctors because they have less education, and it requires less expertise.
