Yes. For my Dept. it's carried in in the squad as well as a Patrol Carbine. However some Deprtments are replacing the Shotgun in favor of the Carbine. Personally I prefer keeping a shotgun handy because of it's versatility.

Yes....Benelli Super 8 semi auto shotgun, AR-15 semi- auto assault rifle are the most common. Anything more SWAT, SRT, or MRT are called in if needed. It is becoming a nationwide requirement since that bank shootout in LA a few years ago.

Most police agencies carry shotguns within there patrol cars. Many, as in California, also carry semi automatic rifles such as mini-14's and such for additional firepower as needed. A prime example would be the bank hold up in Los Angeles where the perpetrators were wearing body armor that cold not be penetrated by either shotguns or the police handguns being carried.

The officers ended up "borrowing" higher powered weapons from a local gun store to stop this threat following many injuries and loss of life. That was a lesson learned in tragic fashion.

It is a sad testament to our society when officer must arm themselves like they were in a war zone, unfortunately many of our inner-cities are just that.

Yes.. Just about all officers carry them.. They are very helpful.. There is at least one on every swat team. We carry one in every car we have and we also have a AR in ever car. Most officers prefer the AR over the shotgun because of the accuracy. I prefer shooting a 1 oz slug into someone if need be.. you will never have to worry about placement.

In the USA, yes, most, if not all police cars now have a shotgun in the car somewhere. If not a shotgun then a patrol rifle. More progressive departments have rifles now.

A department my friend works for has an MP-5 in the car and an AR-15 style rifle in the trunk.

Every police car in our city (I live in NY State - USA) has shotguns locked into the holder in the front passenger's seat of their patrol car.

The officers carry handguns (mostly 9mm semi-auto Glocks) on their person.

Yes. Not all officers do though and it depends on the department. In my department I bought my own shotgun and have to qualify with it annually with my duty weapon and off duty weapon.

Technically it's local policy, which is different for every police agency. I'd guess the majority do carry them, but they are used for different reasons.
A Columbus (Ohio) Police Officer used his shotgun when he shot and killed a murder suspect which involved the murder of "Dime Bag" (sorry, forgot his name, don't remember what instrument he played)

Many do. You just don't see them as much. They used to be mounted in the center of the front seats, but have been moved to other locations to make room for computers and such. Many departments tend to prefer a Remington 875 or Mossberg 500 series.

My agency has a shotgun in every car and the supervisor cars have Ruger mini-14 in them.

We usually don't break them out unless things have gotten serious.
