Question to police officers regarding radar guns/speeding...?

When there's a 'cell' of multiple cars driving and they're all going over the speed limit...how do you know which car tripped the radar? How do you decide which vehicle to pull over?

You are trained to determine the speed before you activate the speed measurement device. It is rare to see a group of cars all doing the same speed, so you take a moment to see if any are pulling away from the others.

If I can pick out the fastest car, that one will get pulled over. If more than one register the same speed, I'll look them over when they pass. I'll look for other violations, such as seat belts. If one isn't buckled up, or I observe another violation, I will usually pick that one.

With a laser, the beam is about 2 or 3 feet wide at 1,000 feet, so you can select a specific vehilce. With radar, the beam is much wider so its use is limited when there is heavy traffic.

Most radars have a narrow enough beam to allow you to select one car. The only exception I know is that if a car is followed by a 18 wheeler it can not pick up the car.

They don't have any idea. They pull one of the cars over and then lie and say that they zeroed in on that car in particular.
