Questionnaire for Law Enforcement?
|
I've asked this once and received a response. I'll send it in again to get another, at least I hope. I need two officers opinions regarding their job so that I can compare and contrast them.
1. Why did you become a police officer? Did you find what you expected? Why or why not?
2. What are the worst parts of your job? Why?
3. What are the best parts of your job? Why?
4. Would you recommend policing as a career to others? Why or why not?
5. Based on your experience, what level of education do you think police applicants should be required to possess? Why?
6. How has your reaction to the public changed since becoming a police officer?
7. How would you improve the force if you had the chance?
8. What has been your best experience since your start?
9. Gender
10. Age
11. Race/ethnicity
12. Years experience
13. Rank
14. Education
15. Type of agency (e.g., municipal, county, etc)

U dont know me
|
1) I wanted to have more than just a job where I sat at a desk and have a boring life. I liked the variety and challenge of a career in law enforcement. I wanted to make a difference in a community and as cliche as it sounds I wanted to help people. It was not as I expected. I spend each day usually dealing with the same gang bangers, druggies, and thieves who will never change or change when it's too late. I spend most days being a marriage counselor and shrink.
2) Trying to help people who have no desire to help themselves. And look to me to fix problems in 20 minutes that took years to create.ie..parents who don't parent.
3) Every once in a while you actually get through to someone and make a positive difference in their life.
4) I have not. It is a good job but... The hours are terrible, the legal system accommodates the offenders, liberal judges and lazy prosecutors ruin good cases, lack of cooperation from the public, the list is too long.
5) I've seen the best Officers come from a background that is less than perfect to say the least. They understand and can recognize certain behaviors in people on the street. As a FTO (Field Training Officer) every person I have seen termintated from the program have had a college background. Some things can't be taught in a classroom and are instinctual.
6) Yes, we are defintely heavily scrutinzed. From the way we look, talk, act, speak, and drive. The public is more and more reluctant to help the police out and provide information. It's a "me" society.
7) Law Enfrocement is a quasi military organziation - we work for the machine. Every Officer is a cog in the machine. Recognizing the officer as a person rather than a title is important. Providing assistance on the job to Officers in need of counseling is huge. Address stress, substance abuse, depression, and post traumatic stress syndrome. Encourage asking for help rather than hiding the issue and living with the skeleton in a dark closet.
8) Being respected by my co-workers and knowing I have been a "good cop". I struggle to find an answer to this question - the bad definitely outweighs the good in this profession.
9) M
10) 39
11) H
12) 12
13) Detective
14) College
15) Municipal |
