Questions about CHP vs Sheriff?

Im looking into being a chp or deputy sheriff but i am uncertain which i will be happier in. If i where a either I would like to go into a specialty unit. How does this happen? For example deputies are assigned certain places but how would i do drug trafficking if i wanted? Is it difficult to work up to a specialty unit? Does CHP do anything else but sit in the car on hwys and gaurd and protect them? THank you

If you are going to be a sheriff, you typically have to work your way up the ladder. A sheriff has many more duties than a highway patrol. A sheriff may be assigned to work in a court room, or a jail for a few years before even being moved to road patrol or any other position.

Plus, a sheriff only has jurisdiction in his own county. A highway patrol covers the whole state.

CHP is going to be a more mobile job, aka you can promote and move to different cities. They have special units, but they definitely are more traffic centered (while county/city police deal with domestic, etc.).

There will probably be more opportunities to move up in CHP, just because it will be a larger force, but it really depends on exactly what you want to do.

HPs have some different units. You can be a crime scene investigator if you want to do something more specialized (obviously it would be analyzing mostly wrecks) and there are also special units designed to find criminals that are avoiding arrest with huge warrants.

County would give you the opportunity to do more drug-related bust type things, although you can sometimes get them by accident on general traffic stops. You also have to deal with more stupidity with county/city, as you will often be called to settle petty disputes or called to hear people whine about their neighbors.

Yes, it's difficult to work with a specialty unit. Often they require you to have logged so many hours in the field, or to be trained in a specialized field/be very gifted at that particular field.

I think a sheriff is better they seem to do better work. Cause like the CHP just pulls people over.
