Is it true a hard trauma plate for a level IIIA could make a bullet ricochet and possibly hurt you or others? Which have they been using longer hard or soft trauma plates when did soft truama plates come out?. I would feel safer with a hard trauma plate for my protection but would not want to accidentally hurt myself or others if the vest was to be used. And which is more common a soft or hard trauma plate. Thank you.

Yes, any hard surface can deflect a bullet. The advantage of the hard plates is they will stop an edged weapon.

I use a soft plate. However, your carrier probably has room for both. If you put the soft plate on the outside of the hard one, a ricochet would be very unlikely.

The bullet enters the trauma plate, possible will shatter on impact which may cause injury. Most high grade trauma plates will stop the round internally and minimize fragmentation. If the safety rating is the same between soft and hard then the protection is the same, its your preference.
