Relocating to England: Need firearms info?
|
I am an American Citizen and could soon be relocated to Bracknell, England for a new job assignment. I currently have a small firearms collection that I would like to bring with me. Several of these would probably not be permitted by general laws in the UK. California in the US has a provision that non-permanent residents of the state may possess firearms not generally allowed as long as they have a special permit.
Does anyone know if the UK has a similar provision? I don't plan on bringing any handguns, however I do have an AK-47 style rifle that I use for sporting purposes (target shooting).
Any info would be appreciated. Additional Details The AK-47 is only a semi-automatic, not a murder machine...
And I don't hunt...I am a target shooter...

Well you AK-47 will have to remain behind, special permits would apply for genuinue needs to hold such weapons that are still in working order - say a movie production company etc.
Automatics are a no no, as are handgun's
I lived in Bracknell, its a nice town, as for the UK there is not much to hunt that would require a high powered rifle. Deer and pig but you would need to travel up to Scotland to get decent wild hunting.
The two reason's anyone civilian is granted a firearm licence is on these two grounds
(a) Target Shooting
You will be expected to be a full member of a target shooting club. Membership will be verified with a club official.
(b) Shooting/Hunter Vermin/Deer or other Quarry Species
Here is a link to the police force website covering Bracknell, which is Thames Valley Police and the force i serve in. Have a look at the firearms section which should cover your questions.

List of prohibted weapons
Common sense dictates that there are many types of firearms, especially those designed for military use, that have no place in the sporting field or hobby of shooting. There are others, for instance some hand guns, which have been brought into the prohibited category by Acts of Parliament. All of the following weapons and ammunition are prohibited:
Section 5 (1)
(a) any firearm which is so designed or adapted that two or more missiles can be successively discharged without repeated pressure on the trigger.
(ab) any self-loading or pump-action rifled gun other than one which is chambered for .22 rim-fire cartridges.
(aba) any firearm which either has a barrel less than 30cm in length or is less than 60cm in length overall, other than an air weapon, a muzzle-loading gun or a firearm designed as signalling apparatus.
(ac) any self-loading or pump-action smooth bore gun which is not an air weapon or chambered for .22 rim-fire cartridges and either has a barrel less than 24 inches in length or is less than 40 inches in length overall.
(ad) any smooth bore revolver gun other than one which is chambered for 9mm rim-fire cartridges or a muzzle-loading gun.
(ae) any rocket launcher, or any mortar, for projecting a stabilised missile, other than a launcher or mortar designed for line throwing or pyrotechnic purposes or as signalling apparatus.
(af) any air rifle, air gun or air pistol which uses, or is designed or adapted for use with, a self-contained gas cartridge system.
(b) any weapon of whatever description designed or adapted for the discharge of any noxious liquid, gas or other thing.
(c) any cartridge with a bullet so designed to explode on or immediately before impact, any ammunition containing or designed or adapted to contain any such noxious thing as is mentioned in paragraph (b) above and, if capable of being used with a firearm of any description, any grenade, bomb or other like missile, or rocket or shell designed to explode as aforesaid. |

As far as I'm aware a special permit is needed for ANY weapon, and even then you need a damn good reason for having it. Generally, guns of any kind aren't allowed to pretty much everyone. |

I am positive that if you applied for a licence for this cash of lethal weapons your work permit and Visa would be withdrawn, as you being an undesirable. So leave them in the USA. |

Essentially, no you can't. Handguns, rifles etc etc, doesn't matter what it is, you are not allowed to bring one here. |

First - read this: http://customs.hmrc.gov.uk/channelsPortalWebApp/channelsPortalWebApp.portal?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=pageTravel_InfoGuides&propertyType=document&id=HMCE_CL_001331

I hope this helps :) If it doesn't, don't shoot me! :D
By the way I've given you the information because they DO say they offer help regarding immigration,.. so you could ask them about importation and legal ownership of firearms. I don't know for a fact if that's where THEIR expertise will help; but if they CAN'T help, they sure will know who CAN. :) |

The UK does not have any such provision for nonresidents.
You cannot bring the AK-47-style rifle. You can probably bring shotguns or pistols if you become a member of the appropriate hunting club and get a permit. But I will warn you that this is a major hassle. |

You will not be allowed to bring your guns to England, leave them where they are, when here, contact your local police station, they will be able to put you in the right direction of how to apply for a firearms licence. |

Looks like Mafiaboss has beaten me to it!!!!!!!!!!
It is very likely that the majority of your collection will have to be left behind. The UK gun laws are much stricter than the US.
AK-47???? Not a hope in hell, semi automatic or not!!!
Sorry!! |

the guns you have for shooting/hunting purposes you can have, as long as you have the appropriate licence. I'm not too sure how you would go about getting this, but if you talk to your local embassy, or representative or whoever, they should be able to tell you. i know a few people who have guns for sporting purposes, and i assume the same rules would apply to you as to them; you just need the licence, and like no criminal record etc. |

Automatic wea[ons and pistols are not allowed int he UK. You can have a licence to fire Rifles (hunting and target rifles etc). If your AK is only semi automatic you may be allowed to licence it , but as it is essentially an assault rifle i doubt it very much. |

You will not get through the airport, due to security. |

The short answer is no.
All semi-automatic firearms are banned in the UK, with the exception of .22LR rifles.
Your best bet for hunting is to bring a bolt-action rifle if you want to keep a gun here. You will need a gun safe that has been inspected and approved by local police. You will need to be part of a gun club if you are planning to be in the UK for a long period of time. There are temporary permits available for short stays, but you will still need approved secure storage.
Our laws are really dumb and only restrict law-abiding ownership, since criminals just get illegal guns anyway, as evidenced by our rising gun crime rates.
To be honest, it is a lot of trouble for UK citizens to get firearms, with most sheeple in the UK thinking that is a good thing. My advice to you would be to skip the shooting while you are in the UK, since you will probably have the sport ruined for you for life if you have to go through all the nonsense that I have had to! |
