Roads, call me old fashioned?

When I was lad, roads were for vehicles and pavements for pedestrians because if you mix the two, pedestrians got hurt. So they use to teach you at school how to cross a road, and even pointed out to use a pedestrian crossing. Nowadays, vehicles are penilised because some one tries to run across and gets hurt. Am I getting cynical?

I agree with you. They don't seem to teach the green cross code anymore and who's fault is it usually when a pedestrian gets hurt? 'The motorist going too fast', not the pedestirain too busy on their mobile phone texting not looking where they're going!

People just don't seem to look anymore before crossing the road. This is something I see all the time. Even when I'm driving at work with blue lights and sirens, within the allowed speed limit for the type of driving, people still step out in front of me!

I agree. We are fast becoming a "nanny" society where Americans are so dumb and inept that the government must babysit them from cradle to grave.

Personal responsibility and mature behavior have gone the way of the "tin lizzy".

It is called 'contributory negligence'. It seems that nowadays whatever you do you have to take into consideration that some idiot is going to do something stupid. eg Lights red, someone jumps them you hit them but you should have slowed and expected someone to jump them therefore by hitting them this is contributory negligence!

The best example is if you break down and put your hazard lights on you are admitting you are a hazard therefore if someone hits you it is your fault. If you break down and do not put the hazard lights on and someone hits you it is still your fault because you have not put them on. See contributory negligence.

Oh I could go on and on, pedestrians on the road, of course you must accept this, hit them and it is contributory negligence. If you are getting cynical, so am I!

Its life now Jim but not as we knew it!

I am a cyclist who is not trying to commit suicide. So I often ride on the empty pavement giving way to pedestrians.
I drive a car as well

Here's the problem. Most cities have jaywalking laws. But when they are enforced, people complain and say it's a BS ticket. So they are rarely enforced.

I ignore it unless someone is being an idiot about it.

Youre not cynical, people are just less patient nowadays, and lack a proper education and upbringing because the government forces parents to go back to work before they have had the opportunity to raise their children and teach them how to behave.

Oh well

YOU have answered your own question , and your sentiments are i believe the sentiments of all motorists, i myself sometimes wonder if the zebra crossing is for looking at only , when you see some PEOPLE,
MORE PEOPLE SHOULD BE CHARGED FOR JAY WALKING, IF INVOLVED IN A ACCIDENT, WITH A ZEBRA CROSSING ONLY YARDS AWAY.

No your right, and actually i think we should try to make a comeback for the red flag man.

Unfortunately people seem to think that they can just launch themselves out in front of traffic.

andit's us old bill that has to scrape them off the front of 18 wheelers.

people LOOK BOTH WAYS

Oskar is in error on bicycles, as they are often banned on sidewalks, due to the nature of speed and pedestrians not mixing well there, either, especially in cities. Yet, on nature trails, they are allowed to mix. So, I accept cyclists, but pedestrians walking in the road is a big nuisance and dangerous, especially if there is a sidewalk ( which is what they were invented FOR ). Some of the problem is due to drivers not giving the right of way for pedestrians, I've seen them almost run over people walking thru a crosswalk, either on a green right turn, or making a right turn on Red. No respect for pedestrians whatsoever ... so the Peds fight back by pretending not to see the cars, so the driver will HAVE to stop. It's a dangerous game of chicken, with the Ped the loser if the driver truly DOESN'T see them, but they'll win the lawsuit. I'd say both sides need to chill, and respect the other's right-of-way when it's their turn, and expect the same in return. Good luck in today's world!

Ah, here we have the age old dilemma...

Pavements are now used by young "hoodies" on bikes that are far too small for them, so pedestrians have to walk on the roads.

As for cars, well, since "private" parking enforcement seem to ticket anything and everything, the pavement has become a car-park for motorist, again, leaving the pedestrian to walk on the road.

But seriously, they are teahing the kids at schools the correct way to cross, although its now called Right Start, not the old green cross code.

No. It irritates me when people walk or bike on the road when there is a perfectly clear sidewalk beside the road. Pedestrians should realize that cars can kill them. Everyone should obey traffic laws. America is not a country for pedestrians, although we'd be better off it we could all walk everywhere!
