SAFE! (or not?)?
|
I was reading on yahoo that a policeman tested the tazer gun on himself and has reported that it is safe to be used on everyone who it gets used on.But.....what if it gets used on a person with epilepsy?
its not like the police are going to ask the person theyr chasing if they suffer with epilepsy.i mean that sends 50,000volt electric shocks through your body and to an epileptic that could cause serious fits or even result to the person dying.
i suffer with epilepsy and not that im going to get into trouble with the police i think that it should be taken away and something that is truly safe to every1 to be used instead.
what r your thoughts? Additional Details im not sure of any alternatives but thats upto the law to sort out. but how do i get my opinon across to them?
and as to the people who say dont do it in the first place there are a lot of dumb people out there who dont think like that.

your right While there are a few good cops, most are crooked and love using excess force the tazer is a method they do not need |

It beats the alternative of shooting them with a hand gun or shot gun....besides, if someone is enough of a threat to have a taser used on them then maybe they shouldn't resist arrest in the first place.
Generally a taser is used if the person, if not subdued, is a threat to the safety of the police officers or Innocent people around them. |

If you break the law then resist arrest and cause a threat to the officer or public, who cares if the person has epilepsy?
I see some of the liberal do gooders have answered it is inhumane, but maybe if this criminal had done something to them or a loved one they would change their tune??
Anyway, i see your point in a court of law, but i feel the moment you resist arrest, you should also forfeit any rights you would expect as a law abiding citizen. |

I sympathize with you, but I also know that police officers do not just simply use a taser or a gun on "anyone". When a police officer is in danger, it is his sole discretion on what to use to protect himself, other officers, and most importantly society.
If someone who has epilepsy has chosen to break the law and become a threat to others, they are aware of the potential consequences. You are correct, an officer isn't going to stop and ask if a person has a medical condition. But the "criminal" isn't stopping to ask the officer he is pointing a gun at if he has a family either.
I do not mean to sound unsympathetic of your concern. My husband does try to be aware of medical conditions - as our own son suffers from metabolic crisis and we can see him go into an uncontrollable rage without warning or explanation (because of low blood sugar - as with diabetics). My husband does try to take those types of things into consideration, but if he is in a life or death situation, his goal is to protect himself and others.
While I do wish that the officers did not need to use these types of "weapons" on anyone, the reality is that as long as the criminals possess worse weapons, our officers must carry them also. |

what can we use that would be safe on everyone? we have pepper spray, but it usually doesnt work that well on peopple, especially if thy are high, drunk, or emotionally disturbed. the taser is a great tool because you cannot fight through it. the amperage is enough to distrupt muscle coordination and function, but not enough to interfere with basic life functions, that is what renders the person incapasitated. the voltage has nothing to do with it. you have a much higher risk dying from household current, which is only 110 volts. it is the amperage that makes the taser work. the problem is that there is no truly safe tool to be used on everybody. the taser is a wonderful tool for police to have. it is truly effective, and very safe. since the taser came out, injuries suffered to officers and suspects have declined. officers no longer have to physically fight to subdue a suspect as often. there are too many good points to having tasers to justify taking them away from police. |

You said it - what's the alternative? Assuming force has to be used (yes, it does sometime as not everybody is as logical as some of the people on this site) CS spray takes up to 20 seconds to take effect and 10% of people are unaffected by it - the rate increases with drug use - for instance, there is a 25% failure rate in one London borough. Pepper spray has the same failing. You could clump them with a baton and run the risk of breaking abone or killing them by hitting the head. You could use a baton round which is much more dangerous which is like being shot with the same risks. There have been countless tests on Tazer and, at the mement, it is by far the safest system. |

i would rather they used a taser, rather than a gun, the police need something to protect themselves, but what i dont know, all the best |

Ok, if you have a heart condition, resisting arrest can just as easily kill as a tazer.
And if you're epileptic, maybe as you run you should shout that to the cops.
There is NOTHING that will work on EVERYONE. What should they do? Shoot a real gun? That's more likely to kill.
It's just like any meds you take for epilepsy. They kill some people - due to a reaction to the meds. So should everyone quit taking them due to a death or 2??? Until they find something that works for everyone? It'll never happen.
Should the police allow a criminal to hurt them or more people when they could have used a tazer and stopped the threat? |

Gee, why don't we just "kill" them with kindness? "Please sir, don't make me pull out this feather and tickle you into submission." I'll do it!
Most of you people have no idea whatsoever what it is like to have to deal with the underbelly of society on a daily basis.
You go to a domestic dispute. You are a male officer, 6' 2" 225 lbs. At the scene you meet the victim a male 6' 190 lbs, who is obviously gay. He says his boyfriend beat him up. It appears that he beat him up good. The boyfriend is still in the apartment. You call out to the boyfriend to come to the door. When he appears he is 6' 6" 265 lbs and built like pro linebacker. This would be the guy you would need a taser for. If he wants to fight. Thanfully for me, this guy was as passive as a lamb. He admitted to beating the boyfriend. He complied when asked to put his hands behind his back and be handcuffed. He went to jail without incident. Why? He had been hit with a taser before.
Tasers are very effective alternative mid range weapon and deterent. |

a police officer will not taser anyone with giving them plenty of prior warning.
i hope then (but is not always the case) that the person being warned and knows they have epilepsy would give up and do as the police officer asks.
if they don't so this then they only have themselves to blame, they are grown adults and should know what will harm them, but in this where theres blame theres a claim society most people like to get tasered, cs sprayed etc to try and claim. the fact that they committed a crime or are suspected of committing a crime apparently does not mean anything.
if it was me whether i had epilepsy or not, and a police officer said stop or i will taser then i would damn well stop but then again i am a mature sensible law abiding citizen. |

I personally think that they use this too quikly sometimes, but if the person is giving them a hard way to go what else are they to do. Its better than shooting out a knee or something. But police abuse their authority in my opinion. |
