School shooting warning in Virginia Beach?
|
I'm a high school student in the area and at three separate high schools (one of which I go to), and I only found out less than an hour ago.
Apparently someone sent out a series of text messages and wrote on the girl's bathroom and locker room walls that on Feb 29 they're going to take a gun and shoot everyone at the schools...now, obviously it seems way too sketchy to seem real but...they're beefing up security a lot.
After all the school shootings lately and then I check my MySpace and all my friends are freaking out saying that their parents aren't letting them go to school tomorrow because of it.
My mom told me she would be fine if I stayed home but would allow me to go to. I just dunno what to do! I have a math test and of course my safety is above all else but...erg! What do I do?! Additional Details I thought the warnings were stupid too if there was going to be a shooting...but Columbine had warnings too before hand...

Dude, i wouldnt risk it. A math test can be taken again but you only get one chance to live. When i lived in New Hampshire we had something similar. Ours was a gang called Crazy 13 that sprayed-painted on the boys' bathroom saying that on March (sorry i forgot the date) Anthrax was gonna be spread through out the school. Nothing happened. We had extra security and extra metal detectors were put not only for guns but for detecting powder substances. It was crazy. There was no SWAT team... but a HAZMAT team was asked to stand by. However MOST cases that give warning, the chances of something happening are rather slim. Unfortunately Columbine was one of the exceptions. If they really want something done RIGHT they wouldnt be spreading rumors, specially with all that security... but stay home. Besides you'll get a day off and im sure you could use one of those =D |

Stay at home, any threats should be taken seriously. I've never actually dealt with issues like yours, so I don't know. I think I'd stay home though.
EDIT:: "Beef up security"? Your school has security? Wow, that's insane. I think my school has an officer assigned to us, that checks in every couple of weeks. :|
EDIT 2:: My school has 1700. That's unfortunate, I'd just take a day off. |

Garrett please stay home. Even if there is enhanced security, someone can still slip by. My day job (lol that sounds funny) is for a security company (we work for the companies that make surveillance products) and even with all the products it is impossible to fully prevent violence. I want you safe.. XD |

Its a load of bs. Someone doesn't want to go to school that day. Why would someone give a warning for something they are set out to do?
Edit:
"It's a school of over 1500...so there does need to be security...but I heard they're seriously bringing in a swat team for security tomorrow.
The situation is no joke."
What? That doesn't make sense. They are bringing in a SWAT team for security tomorrow over a minor threat that was probably from some kid that wanted the school day off? wtf...
Did you hear that from a teacher or a student because that is wayyy out there. It makes more sense to track down the text message instead of using SWAT. Tracking down who text messaged shouldn't be hard and requires far less resources.
Sounds to me like SWAT wants some free real-time training in the public.
Edit:
""Did you hear that from a teacher or a student because that is wayyy out there."
It was just on the local news...it was them trying to insure the student's safety."
I would just stay home in that case then. Because if they are bringing SWAT in for some training, every kid that attends is going to be treated as a suspect the whole day. |

Have you seen any school shooter ever give a warning. Text messages can be traced. How do you think parents get texting bills. Its a cry for attention, a hoax. |

Hmm.
Yea, you should stay home.
Most likely nothing will happen, but people these days are pretty damn psycho. Don't risk your life for math, that's just lame, lol.
But no, seriously. Just stay home. |

I would stay at home; it's better to be safe than sorry. I'm sure the teacher will allow you, and all of the others who do not show, to make up any test that you may miss.
There was a situation like the one you're speaking of in the area where I live yesterday. Nothing happened, but you can NEVER be sure. The students who attend the schools and colleges where shootings have happened probably thought it would never happen to them either :-(
People get into trouble when they ignore the warning signs. |

I honestly don't think anything is going to happen. I would go to school if I were you, but then again, I never skip a day.
I'm sure you'll be fine.
If he wanted to actually kill someone, he wouldn't be dumb enough to write it on a wall. |

Hello Garrett,
I think the article below will explain much as to the orgins of our societies feelings about these threats to our safety.
The 1966 shootings from the Tower at the University of Texas in Austin was the first of what seems to be now a monthly occurance.
The question that should be asked is "What has brought about such a marked change in our society that people resort to such violence?"
I know I don't have all the answers, but I think I have a couple.
First we as a society have forgotten how to care for our fellow man or woman. The individual is no longer thought of as part of the whole but just a cog in the machinery. And if it breaks so what just replace it and move on. That lack caring about our workmates produces a feeling of worthlessness.
Second for those of us that do care, we feel so overburdned that we don't know where to turn to seek answers to the questions that are created by this attitude. We get lost easily and litterly loose to the frustration of the moment.
In both of the above we are driven mad by the lack of concern.
Sad. Very Sad.
By the way I was less than a 1/4 mile from the incident below when it was occuring. Taking pictures of the tower from the edge of campus. I never knew what was going on until that night. The next day I had the pictures developed. They were confiscated by the police as evidence to the crimes. Neve got them back. |

Don't go.
Been there, done that. Last year, my district had a series of bomb threats. Each time, we were put into lockdown. Everyone was hustled into the main gym, and the doors were locked. Security on all entrances, and no one was allowed to leave until the building had been "secured." We've also had "unauthorized visitor" lockdowns, drug lockdowns, and situations where someone dangerous either was not in custody, or escaped custody, and police felt there was a threat to the school.
Right now, you're probably thinking, it can't happen, right? Well, it could. All too easily. Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold probably told a few people, as well. And look how that ended up -- tomorrow, a lot could happen, and you don't want to be there when it does.
In my opinion, taking a math test isn't worth my life.
EDIT: If it were me, I'd stay home, and if I had to, I'd physically stop my friends from going, as well, not to mention anyone else that I could. I don't care if I get in trouble for contributing to juvenile delinquency, or whatever. My school has two police officers and a 12 or so bulky staff members that can pretty much hold their own, but even still, that's not enough. We only have about 1300 students, however, my city has one of the greatest drug and crime problems in the country -- in fact, we made the cover of Time magazine for our drug issues.
Everyone says, it's just a joke, or a prank.. not likely to happen.. but really, does it matter how likely it is? Either it will, or it won't.. but what if it does? You can't guarantee that it won't; no one can. There are ways to get weapons in school -- trust me. Metal detectors or not, it's far from impossible.
Say 19 of these "jokes" occur during 2008. So, by the 20th, everyone thinks, "It's just a joke.." But, what happens when someone's best friend, someone's daughter, someone's niece, look down the barrel of a gun and don't live long enough to realize what they're looking at?
Don't be the victim of "the one that actually wasn't a joke." It's not worth it. |

To be honest, if I were you I would stay home. Chances are nothing will happen and it's just an empty threat (as most of these things are), but you never know if it is real or not. Screw the math test, since so many of the students and parents are flipping out your teacher might reschedule it. You are more important than the test. I would stay home just to be on the safe side. Even though it is quite unlikely to happen, if you do go to school and something happens have a plan for each room that you are in. Don't try anything heroic, just concentrate on being safe. Hide wherever you can and follow whatever directions you are given. In the end it's up to you, just think it over carefully.
EDIT: Dude, if they're announcing it all over the news, STAY HOME. Better safe than sorry. I would rather you play it safe and have a day off of school than wind up as a target. |

well i think you should stay home if thats really what you heard because chances are it might not be a joke and that it can be a girl who wrote that since it was in the girls bathroom because someone with thier right mind would never write that only someone who needs to be in the hospital would write such a thing
i would stay home from school if i were you because it might really happen besides all you can do is pray that it doesnt happen if you believe in a higher power

I think you should stay home for obvious reasons. However think of previous school shootings. Was anyone warned in advanced before they happened, no, so why would this be any different? A girl at my school threatened to bring a gun last year because she was p*ssed at the teachers and like half the students. She chickened out and went to juvie. So yea...I wouldn't worry too much, but if you think the person threatening to bring the gun is the kind of person who would you should probably stay home....
*edit*
On second thought, please stay home. It may be some sick twisted "joke" but you never know, and with all the shootings that have happened in the past you probably shouldn't risk it. You can always make up the math test if you miss it, but you won't be able to go back and skip school if this person does bring a gun. You said yourself the situation is no joke...So why risk your life when you know what could/might happen?
My school has had a lot of "surprise lockdowns" to see how we'd react if someone did bring a gun. They've searched lockers, brought in drug dogs, and made us stay in our first/second period classrooms for the first 3-4 hours of school during these lockdowns. There's only about 500 students in the high school here so they dont feel the need for major security. However there have been shocking amounts of shooting/bomb threats considering how few kids we have in this sh*tty place people call a "town". So no matter how many or few kids there are, safety and security is never a joke... |

This happens more than you think - especially after situations like Northern Illinois and Columbine, etc.
Whether they are serious or not - tomorrow will tell. How ever be it - a cruel joke, attention getter or serious threat - life does not stop. Did you refrain from air travel since 911? If you continually alter you daily life due to situation like this - you might as well dig a big hole - line it with cement - and live out your days.
You are probably more likely to be injured or killed traveling with your family in the car on one of the nations roadways. People fear things that are "hi risk" "low frequency" more than anything. The true likely hood of this occurring is most likely low. And when it does - few people are actually killed or injured. Northern Illinois University - a short distance from my home is a campus of over 15,000 students I believe - so do the math. |
