Should I buy a gun?
Find answers to your legal question.

Should I buy a gun?

Throughout my entire life, I've always been excessively paranoid about personal safety. I also happen to be anti-gun.

I completely support the Second Amendment but I also worry about guns falling into the wrong hands.

At this point, I'm completely torn. I seriously doubt that if I got one, my gun would get fired even once- other than target practice.

Right now, I'm so intimidated by guns that I wouldn't ever want to be in the same room with one, unless it was in the hands of a police officer. However, I also feel like I'll never feel completely safe unless I have one.

I know that I'm unnecessarily paranoid in both respects. I've considered self defense classes but there's nothing that could convince me that a 100 lb female could definitely defend herself against a 200 lb man, if the need arose.

What are your views on the average citizen, with no concrete threat against her safety, possessing a gun for personal safety?

Sorry if this isn't in the right section. I wasn't sure where to ask.

Of course if I was to buy a gun, it would be legally and I would receive necessary training.

Better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

It's good that if you are getting one that you plan to get some training to go with it.

Also, you don't have to purchase a handgun. A shotgun is much more effective and a lot easier to aim. You won't face the likelyhood of an intruder trying to take it away from you or think that you won't use it.

Just remember Guns dont kill people .. PEOPLE kill people..
Learn to use it responsibly... take the courses.. learn how to store it and keep it away from children.. make sure you get the permits/ licenses...I own several and I dont want to ever have to use one but will if I have to... and its nice to know I have them ..

Hey sweety! Ok I own several guns. I have a glock, matching ruger Vaquero's, LOVE THEM... a M1a RIFLE, I also have a 22 pistol, 22 rifle, 7MM08 RIfle. I also have a 20 guage shot gun.
I also have a lever action rifle, for cowboy action.. Dont remeber what that one is as my husband has it locked up and I dont shoot it as often as the others.
I mostly do target shooting, but I also hunt and have the glock for protection.
We have bears here, and coyote's so I carry my glock for noise to scare them.
If you want a gun go for it. Get a glock though. I love mine.
Learn how to shoot it and start with target practice.
You will find it fun. I understand the intimidation but once you start you will see it is fun.
You might never have to use it but you never know.
(my husband is a police officer and I am a former Marine.)

Bossoli!

You should find a certified shooting range.. Hire a person to train you first then you will know if you can handle having a gun. when I was younger that's what I did. My mom worked for Colt fire Arms for many years so guns were not something I feared but I just never fired one before.
I went and was trained in the art of firing a hand gun!
I found out I hated it and I also wasnt really good at it either.
I never bought a gun of my own but at least I knew!
I now carry very strong pepper spray!

Your getting a Goldie! How cool! :)

i can understand yoou problems. when i first got divorced very unfriendly i was scared of my ex. never had fired a gun as my parents didn't believe in having one in the house. i lived by myself on six acres a mile off the road. so one of my friends took me to gun show and got me a mossberg 410 shotgun. said that it should take care if anyone tried to get in house. give me lessons until i could hit what i aimed at. loaded it with shot, shell, sshot, shell. said that if they wanted to keep coming after the shot the shell should stop them. the reason behind the 410 was as you i'm not much over 100 pounds. said it shouldn't knock me down firing it. as you said i've never fired it except for targets, but found i enjoy shooting.

I am pro-gun but I'm sure you'll get several arguments on both sides of the line. I believe that guns are a necessity for protection. I'm not a gun fanatic like my husband but I do see the benefit to owning a firearm. Especially when you reside in a large city and it can take law enforcement 45 minutes to arrive to a call.

However, I believe that first you should receive training. You should look into taking a gun safety course. Because your gun shy, you might want to look into a 9mm or even a p22. These guns have less recoil than say a 40 or 45. They are good to learn on yet still have the stopping power to offer you protection.

If you're going to get a gun for protection you need to spend time getting to know the gun and spend time practicing your marksmanship on the range. The gun is worthless unless you can hit a target. That's what the time spent on the range will help with.

Hope that helps you a little.

That is your own personal choice. It sounds to me that you have an irrational fear of firearms.

"Right now, I'm so intimidated by guns that I wouldn't ever want to be in the same room with one, unless it was in the hands of a police officer. However, I also feel like I'll never feel completely safe unless I have one. "

I have no problem of anyone who can legally posses a firearm having a firearm. A defensive firearm though is a different matter. It is not a security blanket, to make you feel better. It is not a "I have a gun, go away" intimidater. It is a lethal weapon! If you have a firearm for defense, you better well be prepared to use it as such. From your question you are not there, yet.

If your serious about getting a firearm, find a NRA class near you.

Bossoli, this may be a lame answer but have you considered pepper spray? I carry it with my wherever I go.

Look if you learn to handle a gun u wont fear them but still respect them which is the way it should

You have the right to posses a firearm. If you decide to get one be sure to get one that is comfortable to you. Talk to the experts in your area, take classes. I can think of nothing worse than someone scared to death with a firearm in their hand that they don't know how to use or are unwilling to use. That is a recipe to get yourself killed.

TBoxer02
Based on your feelings about guns and your self-professed paranoia, I would say a gun is not a good choice. I own a hand gun and feel very comfortable around guns. A paranoid attitude and uneasiness about guns is a bad combination. You don't want to risk shooting something or someone by mistake.
I would lean toward a taser. My girlfriend is small and I am on frequent business trips. Although a gun is in the house, I bought her a taser for protection. It is easier to handle and she is much more comfortable with it.
Good luck with your decision. Remember, a weapon your not comfortable with can be as bad as no weapon at all.

As a fellow paranoid female,........ I would like to have a gun as well. I do think that if you are going to get one definitely get trained and be sure that you are sure you will shoot if you need to and not allow it to be taken away from you and used against you.

I would not recommend a shot gun though. They KICK! You'll end up on your behind or at best with a really bruised shoulder (especially if you only weigh 100 lbs)

I know I sleep better at night having one nearby. I also have a Rottie and a Shepard in the house which is better than any security system. When I used to live in the city a young lady and man were going door to door selling security systems. When the guy saw my shepard he went and stood on the sidewalk because she does not let strange men near my house. Maybe you should start with a dog since you are uncomfortable around guns.

Once you have the proper permits and training, you should be able to buy any firearm you want to in my book!

Once you have the training and shoot a couple of times, you may surprise yourself! I've had friends that were "anti-gun" ... got trained and licensed to carry, went shooting a few times and loved it.

Some of them enter shooting competitions now, and win!

I seriously hope that if you do get a gun, the only time you shoot it is on the range (practice or competition). Very few of the police officers I know have ever had to shoot anywhere but the range! That would be a good thing!

As the first answer says "better to have and not need, then need and not have!"

Good luck!

It is a decision only you can make. If you decide to get one, it is good that you receive proper training. Also self defense is a good option. Yes, a 100 lbs woman can defend herself against a 200 lbs man. But the ultimate decision must be yours.
