Should I have my daughter arrested? She is taking meth, and can't quit.?

She refuses to go anywhere for help. I don't know what to do! I know that the people she hangs with are using as well. She can't hold a job, doen't come around to see her family and seems like a stranger.

There are better ways to deal with it than having her arrested.
You can have an intervention done to get her into rehab. In an intervention, there is a mediator who is usually rehabilitated from the same substance, and what happens is your daughters friends and family would speak about how your daughter's habit has and is affecting them. She is then asked to go into rehab, and the mediator can help facilitate that.
If you have her arrested, she is only going to be clean for the time she is in jail, she will be further alienated from you, and she will go back to it.
God bless you and your daughter, I hope you can reach her. |

For the love of your daughter, yes, yes, yes and hell yes. You may save her life. It is a matter of life and death and time is of the essence. |

First off I want to say how sorry I am that you are in this situation. I lost someone I loved to drugs and it is a pain that cannot be verbalized. What you are suggesting might save your daughter's life, however if there is any way an intervention might work I would try that first. If you decide to call the police she may become very hostile toward you, so get ready for that. But as you said she is now a stranger to you and you are probably at the end of your rope. I wish you well. |

i think you really have to think about whether you should arrest her or not it can have its advantages and disadvantages
advantages:1.she might realize what shes doing is going to get her killed soon
2.she would go cold turkey and stop
disadvantges:1.prison is a place where you cn easily get your hands on anything you can think of and she would jst end up continuing to use it there
what im trying to say is you all have to talk to her all the close family and all the close friends which you know dont use meth i really suggest you go on a vacation for a month or two with your daughter somewhere far somewhere where she wouldnt be able to use meth or lay her hands on it and when she gets clean she might with your help come to terms with what shes really doing with her life
i really think you shouldnt send her to jail it wouldnt be good in the long term she might end up blaming you for something that would happen to her.
i wish you luck and i really really hope she stops using meth |

yes i believe the only sensible course of action is to have her arrested and show her what the real world is like. she may not be verry happy with you for a while but eventualy she will realize that what you did was for the best. |

It will actually be hard to "get" her arrested. And it would be for possession only, which means only probation. |

getting her arrested won't do a thing. sure, she may get clean while she is in jail but as soon as she gets out she'll start using again. if they sentence her to rehab, she'll go and as soon as she gets out of there she'll go back to using. unfortunately, unless she is ready to stop using, there is nothing you can do to help her. your best bet is to take care of you and pull yourself away from her in order to protect yourself. |

jail is cheap rehab. it is also a better alternative than death. |

I think what you should consider is an intervention. Law enforcement is not involved in these unless they need to be. You can call a local Narcotics Anonymous office to get more information about it. They are listed in every phone book.
I'm a long time member of AA and I have been on several interventions (also called 12 step calls). They can vary as to the extent they take but it can range from simply taking someone to a meeting or getting them admitted to a treatment facility.
I recommend that you try this first. It will be a difficult experience to go through. You will need to be present. NA can tell you all about it and how it will come about. They will explain what is done and what will happen.
I wish you luck. Feel free to email me if you like.

Arrest isnt the answer you are looking for and unless she is actually caught with the meth on her, she wont be charged anyway. In addition, even if she is arrested for possession, it is doubtful she will get any time and will probably be released the next day. If she is sentenced it will be a short sentence even if she gets time, which I doubt. I've seen many addicts and there is little you can do. Do not enable her, at all, by giving her any tangible thing such as money or something she can sell. Don't let her in your house unsupervised and if she has a key, change the locks. Addicts will hurt anyone to assist the habit. Provide what emotional support you can WHEN or if she gets treatment but that is all you can do. You will always love your daughter, but that doesnt mean you have to like what she does so your going to have to take a step back, encourage her to seek help, but nothing more. I'm sorry to say I doubt she will ever kick the habit. Meth, crack and heroin are 3 of the worst drugs to be hooked on and the quickest to develop an addiction on. Good luck in the future |

If you feel this is the only way to get her help, then by all means, YES YES YES. And it can be annonymous. All you have to do is call your local department. They may refer you to 911 if their 911 center dispatches all calls, emergent and non emergent. Tell them what you know, and they will take care of it. If you file the complaint, they should have to follow up. |

yes. just think of it like this if the police come to your house and find the meth inside your home you all get the arrest. if you call it in to the police as a concerned parent then she gets the help she needs and can't check out until she completes her rehab. |

I don't really have a solution for you. I don't know if having her arrested is the best solution. Drugs are also in the jails and she will be surrounded by the worst of the worst. You don't mention how old she is. If she is a minor you really have more options. Some parents are so frightened when they find their children using drugs they overreact (sounds unlikely, but true). What she needs is the love of her parents and to be removed from the environment she is in. But I would think arresting her would be the absolute last step.
I wish you well. |

try rehab first if that does not help take her to the local police department and turn her in that might be the only way to save her life. if she wants help she will be happy to go to rehab. |

ahh, damn i really feel for you, that would be terrible to see a person you love going down a down hill spiral of destruction. and what makes it harder is she is refusing to ask for help, or acknowledge that she has a problem. I don't know if calling the police is going to make a difference as unless she is dealing, police usually don't want much to do with addicts. Jail time may only make it worse. She needs to realise the problems that she has and admit herself that she needs help and treatment. I wish i could be more helpfull sorry, but please try to stay strong. |

be there for her and let her hit her rock bottom, 'cause she will. it is always the same--- jails, institutions, death, or recovery. please i beg you do not turn your back on her ever, but you must allow her to make her own mistakes. just be there for. god bless and the best of luck to you all.
getting her arrested will just cause more problems and she will always blame you, even when this is all over. |
