On parts of the German autobahn network, where there is a long tradition of having no mandatory maximum speed limit, 85th percentile speeds in 1996 were around 95 mph11. This is just 10 mph higher than the current 85th percentile speed on UK motorways and only 7.5 mph higher than might be expected with an 80 mph limit.
The evidence from international experience suggests, therefore, that an increase in the UK motorway speed limit, or even its removal altogether, would have only a modest effect on actual speeds. It would lead, however, to a substantial reduction in the proportion of drivers who habitually break the law. |

The speed limit is there for a reason - encouraging drivers to travel at 100+mph is a reckless idea. |

i dont thing should cuz if they do people will be careless and just wouldnt care, and cars could get out of control. and some cars wouldnt be able to keep up with the speed unless every car they make would be able to reach speeds that fast |

Yeah accidents can happen at any speed, but the faster you're going, the more dangerous and potentially fatal the crash could be.
Plus the good British Government (especially Wales :|) get shitloads of money each year from speeding tickets, so I doubt they'll be giving that up anytime soon. |

It's safer if cars are all doing about the same speed. If you're doing 90 in the left lane, and somebody doing 50 in the right lane decides to change lanes (and doesn't look more than 100 feet behind him), you're going to run into him with your 40mph extra speed and not enough time to react. |

Yes accidents can ahppen at 20mph but the severity is a heck of a lot less then someone travelling at 120mph. You'd cause more damage and you'd be dead. No the limit shouldn't be abolished that would cause reckless driving with people always trying to get in front of the car ahead. It's there for a reason, what should ahppen if your travelling at 100mph and something comes flying out from the car in front you have no chance of braking in time to miss the cars ahead and nor will the car behind you. |

not until they train motorists on speedways & redo the drivers test yearly. |

I think there is a requirement for a speed limit, as there are a lot of drivers there who are really bad drivers.
or young lads in a fast car without the experience to handle the speed
if there was no limit there would be lots accidents as just because its possible to do 100mph does not mean its safe to do so.
what i would like to see is more lorries being pulled over for doing more than 60 mph.
anyone towing anything is not to do more than 60 mph either
i have seen cars pulling large caravans out in the fast lane doing 90 mph at least.
we all see the lorries over taking each other as they are doing 3 mph faster then take 5 miles to complete the over take....
if lorries stuck to 60 mph i would not have to do at least 80 mph to get past in order to see whats coming and get away from spray in winter....
so no keep speed limit but bloody enforce it. |

how much of a hurry must you be in if you need to travel at over 100mph? if you cant see the reasons why driving that quickly is dangerous then theres no point in debating anyway, its pretty bloody obvious. |

I think if people could get back to the basic rules of motorway driving i.e. don't undertake - EVER!, don't just drift down the middle lane, don't tailgate, etc then we may have some headroom to increase the speed limit. But until then, sadly we still need restrictions on the motorways to catch those ar**holes that still endanger our lives daily!! |

the speed limit was imposed on the motorway to stop car manufacturers from testing there cars on public highways
like which happened in the sixties when they tested the AC COBRA on the M1 which was clocked at doing over a 150 mph motorist complained to the police about the speed of it parliament then set the speed limit at 70 mph for the safety of the public and its been with us ever since...
i would agree that yes it should be raised to 80/90 mph as the average driver drives at that speed and all cars nowadays are fitted with ABS where as in the sixties cars took forever to stop because of drum brakes all round but can you honestly see them raising the limit ??? the anti car brigade would go mad (mind you i think they already are) |

You must not be from America, but here not many poeple got over 100mph |

Soon all speed limits will be abolished
your control over your car will soon be taken away from you and an automatic device fitted to control speed and stop tailgating
the future is just around the corner |

Not abolished but it should be raised to 80-85 and then enforced more strongly.
Motorway discipline in the UK is not good enough to have unrestricted motorways. |

No, but I think the speed limit should be lowered in some areas and raised in some other areas. |

Yes it's totally out of date and how many people actually drive at 70 mph on a motorway |

I think now it should be compulsory that when someone applies for a driving licence, they must have a written declaration from a responsible person in society that gives a character reference of the applicant.
There are so many lousy drivers on the road, how could you think of such a thing you moron. |

with all cars safer now than when the spped limit was created, i say that the speed limit should be raised on motorways |
