Should UK Life Prison sentences mean life, or should the guilty be allowed parole/release?

I believe life should mean exactly that life, no parole, no release for good behaviour, just life.

Yes life should mean life if your 18 and get life you would be about 45 when you get out thats not right you should die in prison.Thats my thoughts. |

life should mean death, if you're convicted of a crime where you'll spend all your natural life in prison then i think its a money saver just to execute them. |

The term life sentence should be adjusted. When they say 'life', they often mean about 15 to 20 years, which with sentence reductions for good behaviour often means they actually serve half of that. As advances in medical science etc mean that people are living longer as a whole, so the length of a life sentence should be reviewed to say 40-50 years, or should be on a sliding scale according to the type of offence and the age of the person committing it. For example, someone who is 18 and convicted to life will be out in their early 30s.
There is a facility for really serious criminals to be kept in prison for their entire life already and I think that there should be a reduction for good behaviour for other lifers. Part of the criminal justice system is rehabilitation. If a lifer has no chance of ever getting out, what incentive is there to just stop at one serious crime? How would control inside prison be affected if there are loads of prisoners with absolutely nothing to lose?
There will be those that say, 'If they can't do the time, they shouldn't do the crime' and that if they know they will actually be in prison for life, they wouldn't commit the crime at all but it's rarely as cut and dried as all that. There are many reasons why people commit serious crime and consideration of the consequences when they are caught appears way, way down the list. |

The term 10 years or life or even 6 months should be that length of time. After all we can't retire early because we are good at our jobs!! |

that's why its called life
not 17 years than go free
the only way to check good behavior is on the out side,
the fact you got life for something you did on the outside proves you have failed
statistically vast majority of released offenders repeat crime
the % of none repeat offenders is not worth the lives ruined by these that do not repeat offence |

The trouble is, that they have made prison that good, that people are committing crime, so they can get life in prison. |

I believe life should mean life as this sentence is only given to those who have taken a life. Unfortunatley life in this country still only amounts to 16 years and less for good behaviour. Life to me should mean life, it's an insult to the families killed by these criminals that they should be released when the families are still living the nightmare for losing their loved ones. When do they get parole, the sentence never ends for the families or the person killed. In fact i would go as far to say that they should bring back hanging, why should good tax payers pay to keep them locked up? |

why is it called life sentence speaks for itself you would think but the old pc brigade wont have that lets go back to the old way and bring back hanging after all the criminals have no regard for others lives so why should we spare there's it may sound barbaric but that is what they r |

Life should be life. In the US military life means just that. |

The main aim of prison sentences should be to rehabilitate the offender. Our society is too worried about receiving retribution for the crime that the criminal has committed. Of course in some cases, such as murder, the offender should be punished severely. However, I do not believe that they should be incarcerated for life. |
