Of course they should carry a gun! Would you send your toy poodle to fight a grizzly bear? They may as well be carrying a fly-swatter for the good a metal stick will do against a gun.
Oh Beth. You poor uninformed girl! If the police in USA didn't carry guns, we may as well tie their hands behind their backs. The criminals carry ILLEGAL firearms. Gang members have all sorts of artillery. Would you like to be a policeman facing a hostile situation where guns are involved with just a stick? Give me a break.
And Huge-- how many doctors have killed innocent patients? Are you willing to quit going to them? Or take away their means to help others? Stupid logic, my friend. The ratio doesn't play in your favor. Use your head. |

I think everyone in Law Enforcement with proper training should carry a firearm, and everyone with proper training, a clean criminal background, and a psych test. If all the good people carried weapons, then all the criminals might think twice before commiting a crime. |

yes, because i think people would take them more seriously. i mean lets face it, bobbies on bikes with a baton? what is he gonna do, bike like the clappers till he catches you and if you are in a car.....
I think a lot of people would be put off commiting crimes if the police carried guns. I'm English and I LIVE in USA and we do not have the crime of stabbings and shootings here in South Dakota that have been happening in England. I was so upset by all of that going on over there, dont you think some of it could be avoided if police actually carried guns to stop offenders? |

We have been living in Spain for the last 6 years and got used to seeing police carrying guns. I don't see a problem with it in the UK. |

I think some people are misjudging what the question is.
I think citizens should NOT be allowed to carry guns, and all laws in place should stay there so that there aren't any on the streets.
But, I do agree that more police officers should be equipped better, depending on their training. They could have Taser guns, plastic bullets, or even the real thing depending on what part of the country the officers are from.
Police officers in places with bad crime rates for example should be given guns to protect themselves and citizens. |

Yes because how many times have you heard of a GANG OF 15+ THAT STAB TO DEATH SOME INNOCENT. Even if a cop or two cops were avaliable against a gang of teens with knifes, crowbars or even that large number would see two officers probably dead along with the victim. Hate to say it but it seems it is necessary now. |

"should and be given powers to use them on judgement" Yeah, let them loose on every underground!
The police federation consistently votes against the carrying of lethal weapons for beat officers. |

All I know is I was watching an episode of COPS and a British police officer who moved to the states became an officer here. She said that she would never go back to work as a cop in the UK if she was not allowed to carry a firearm.
I don't blame her. |

UK citizens and police should be allowed to carry firearms.
But then they'd be free, and no longer subjects. |

NO. I think the UK should prides itself in not having to use guns and firearms. We have a much lower rate of homocidal crime here than in the USA or Finland, and in my opinion the use of guns by ordinary citizens promotes a violent society that puts the law into its own hamds. Anyhow, in particular siuations in which the police know that guns are needed, they are given them. So its not like they are completely vulnerable. I do think that living in a society in which police prowl the streets heavily armed provokes the misuse of weapons. If firearms become a common feature on the streets of Britain, then you get this sort of "Police state" problem. |

They should be available but not as a general rule. Part of the reason for the distrust of even law abiding citizens is that they are becoming more and more like a military force. We have already seen a couple of instances in which the police were a little trigger happy and I am not talking about Mendes |

No they can't be trusted with them. Too many innocent people have been shot already |

no. british policemen cannot be trusted with firearms (there's an inquest going on right now, you may have heard about it) |

No, I don't think so. The UK doesn't really have a gun problem like the US does, and having firearms causes all sorts of liability issues. Just look at how often US police departments get sued for excessive force and violation of civil rights. |

It does seem quite a dangerous job these days. Giving firearms to police officers though would just increase the number of firearms on the street. Maybe they could use tranquiliser dart guns like vets do on TV. |

No I cannot agree, many police around the world have killed innocent people because they have guns. Best not to replicate that mistake here any more than they have already. The non-leathal means like taser and pepper spray will do just fine. |

nonono.. that s a NO. plod already carries guns, by trained firearms officers... who know how to shoot...
you really want to recreate downtown los angeles here in England... are you mad.
we already have madness, we dont need crims who really do shoot first and coppers who turn the streets into battlegrounds...
mind you, a good bloodbath might let the thugs know whats around the next corner... |

UK police should NOT carry firearms. If the police are tooled up, the gangs will then also become tooled up.
Armed police do not deter criminals. Just look at the USA to see whether armed police work.
Edit - I am not uninformed - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crime_in_the_United_States
We do not have this issue in the UK. If our police were armed it would open a whole can of worms that we can do without. |
