Should a 14 year old be behind the bar of the local pub?
Find answers to your legal question.

Should a 14 year old be behind the bar of the local pub?

Surely this is encouraging young people to drink and become accustomed to alcohol.

Hi Joshua, this was in my local village pub in Devon.

No I dont think they should be and it is against the law. If I were you I would call the local police and tell them about it. Myabe you should call the local paper and the news. That is why young people think its ok to drink. I am 23 and in the navy and i really dont drink. I drink maybe 4 or 5 times a year and when i do i only have about 3 drinks. there is nothing wrong with drinking but people should learn how to act and control them selfs.

Question,,,, is he drinking or assisting with bar service? Did he just walk in, or is this a family business? How long does he stay there? Is he there every night til closing, or just until later in the evening, & then he leaves before every one gets drunk & makes a fool of themselves. Do the bar owners drink while he is working? Will this affect his drinking in the future? Depends. My family owned a bar many years ago, & I was often there. Do I have a drinking problem? no Do I enjoy an occasional drink? yes. More information is needed before a judgment should be made.

Is this 14 year old related in any way to any of the employees at said bar?

And Joshua, you'd be surprised at how many 14 year olds have already touched alcohol.

English law answer: Since the Licensing Act 2003 came into force in November 2005 it is now perfectly legal for ANY age person to serve alcohol in and from a bar or off licence , PROVIDED they are under the supervision of some one who holds a 'personal licence' ( ie has passed a Govt. approved examination in licensing law ) AND / OR are supervised by someone 18yrs plus who has in turn been approved by the management. The young person does not actually have to pass the Govt. examinations themselves but they are eligible to sit it as there is no lower age limit, if they pass it they can not get a personal licence until they become 18yrs. Ironic - maybe but that's the law. Any issues of child employment hours, health & safety etc. are seperate considerations.
All other English references to 18 / 21 etc. being the age to serve were changed when the 'old' Licensing Act 1964 was repealed in 2005. As a general point they can not drink alcohol until 18yr except when 16 / 17yrs old in special situations of beer, wine & cider with a meal, when the purchasing is done by an adult who must stay with them whilst the consumption takes place.

Edit 1. Perhaps the usual thumbs down troll would care to explain how a definitive statement of English law can be a 'wrong answer' . I didn't make the law, I just try to help by explaining what it is .. if you know any different have the courage to identify yourself in an answer yourself and say why I am wrong in the same way I have politely pointed out why other answers to this question are wrong.. Thank you.

Sounds illegal to me. To handle alcohol (i.e. sell it) you must be 18 years of age. Sounds like you are in a different country though...so maybe not illegal there!

Ben Gunn
Try buying alcohol in a supermarket when the checkout person is 17. They call an adult to make the sale. Doesn't that indicate to you that the same law applies in a bar? The age is 18.
In the US the age is 21, but a 21 year old American is roughly equivalent to an 18 year old Brit.

No totally illegal, minor's cannot sell or serve alchahol, his parents would be in a lot of trouble as would the bar owners

I thought that you had to be 18 to even work in an area where alcohol is served.

Here's the irish law, I assume british is very similar.
1. There is a limit to the hours a minor can work.
2. Minors are not permitted in a pub after 9pm
3. Minors are not permitted to sell alcohol.
So a part-time 14 year old bottle boy who finishes work before 9pm is perfectly alright.

BooYa Boo
why not?! u r over-reacting. let the kid live a little!!!

Tori
isn't that against the law for someone to be behind a bar thats under age?

As long as he/she is not serving alcohol, which would be illegal, I can't see a problem with it. Better than hanging around on the streets, drinking, smoking and getting up to who knows what?

Sweetpea
If said child is the bar back bringing ice, soda, juice, etc...I see no problem with it. It will not promote or encourage drinking. If a kid is going to drink they certainly don't need a bar to encourage them.

If he is not smoking or drinking alcohol, it really does not matter.

I don't see how he is encouraged to drink by standing behind the bar, rather than seeing people drinking in pubs on TV, for example.

In any case, we should be familiarising our children with alcohol, its effects, and the appropriate way to behave in company, and watching from behind the bar, whilst in the presence of a supervising adult, seems a very good way to do just that.

Oh Crud!
most 14 year olds drink, be thankful they're at a bar and not hanging around in a carpark at gone 12 =)

If they are serving alcohol it would be illegal. A 14 year old can work a few hours per week with parental consent. I would think (unless it is the son/daughter of the Landlord/Lady) they would have difficulty justifying the presence of a minor in a public house.

NO! It is illegal for anyone under the age of 21 (in my state) to serve alcohol. Besides a fourteen year-old shouldn't even think about pubs. It might cause them to seee how much "fun" people are having, and they might try it out themselves. Especially if they haven't been taught that alcohol kills. I totally disagree with Booya.

Outsider
The youngest barman in the country is 12. They have to sit difficult exams before being allowed to serve behind the bar, but it is perfectly legal for him to serve alcohol.

I don't think this will encourage him to drink, since he will be the sober one in the pub watching how people change under the influence of alcohol... in fact it might be a good lesson to him, seeing what happens when people drink too much.

No they shouldn't, and they legally can't... where did you see this??

--edit--
And "Skinhead"... most 14 year olds have never touched alcohol. You must be saying that because you're 14 or something but you know that's bs.

NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I started drinking at 12 anyway... If they want to, I say let them. Why should it make people unhappy?
