Should i carry a knife? ?
Find answers to your legal question.

Should i carry a knife? ?

I don`t live in an inner city area, more like the suburbs. Last week there was a mysterious fellow lurking in my neighbours garden, he was hiding from police and was holding not one but two knives. The police found him and pulled out Mp5 machine guns and pointed them in his face for an hour until he surrendered. I work nights and have to walk from my local train station at around midnight everyday. There are a lot of "urban hoody types" moving into the area. Should I carry a knife to protect myself? How about a truncheon? I`d rather get arrested than killed. Wouldn`t you? A young man in Hackney has just died after falling from a balcony after being chased by a gang of youths. Would he still be alive if he had waved a razor sharp, 12 inch hunting knife at them? DISCUSS

I should have added that i`m from the uk, I should have also posted in Yahoo uk, sorry about that. Although it is becoming quite apparent that Americans and British have very different views on self protection. You are basically not allowed to defend yourself in the uk. Wow.

I see what you are saying
but would we not tempt fate..?
by carrying knives around with us
the danger would be great..
for any little arguement
would end up in a fight
and stabbings would be numerous
and go on every night

no ....we must not get paranoid
.......I blame the gutter press
Sky news just try to frighten us
"..THE WORLD IS IN A MESS..!!"
people are still just the same
and don't want any troubles
like you they want to live their lives
...inside their little bubbles

so let the law just do its job
....they try to do their best
and let us give them our support
and they will do the rest..

No you could get arrested, see if you can buy pepper spray.

Mrs.Doyle
No, you should not carry a knife. That's against the law. You are already guilty of intent.
What if it was used against you? You need good training to be effective with a knife.
Get some mace instead.

And a pair of Nikes!!

asseenfromoutside
NO. Not unless you want the police to stick a gun up your nose. Just think one sneeze and you've lost your head.

This is an interesting question.. You are obviously scared of other members of the public because they are carrying knives or at least you perceive that they are. And you realise this is a problem because you are openly talking about it. Yet, you think the answer to the problem is to actually carry one yourself.

The only people who actually carry knives are those who want to hurt other people. Or people who haven't given much consideration to the subject. Think about it.. Someone stops you in the street, a robber perhaps. And they take out a knife and threaten you with it. What good is a knife to you? Believe me, you are much likely to be stabbed if you are holding a knife yourself. Practically it's not going to help you. Also in reality you will just give them your mobile phone because you wont want to risk being stabbed.

I may be unpopular for saying this but, most people who get stabbed (not all) are members of gangs and are involved in this sort of crime anyway. And normally carry knives. Don't get me wrong, this does not make it any less tragic, what I'm saying is the best way to avoid people with knives is to not put yourself in these positions.

Weapons will NOT make anyone any safer on the streets. If you are actually that scared of this, wear a stab proof vest. More expensive short term but they actually DO protect you unlike a knife. Also, do you really want to have to stab someone to protect yourself. You cannot fight fire with fire!

Furthermore, you ARE allowed to defend yourself in this country. You may even use lethal force to protect yourself or others if you can justify doing it. What you have to understand is that carrying weapons is NOT a justifiable way to defend yourself. Imagine if everyone carried weapons to 'protect themselves'.

Now for the answer...! The only way to get knives and weapons off the streets is by imposing a MINIMUM sentence of say 4 years in prison and give the police greater stop search powers. At the moment there is no deterrent.

NO, don't bring a knife, unless you really wanna land yourself in the crap. Common sense comes in to this.

Probably not. The best thing would be to learn some type of martial art or self defense skills. If you don't feel safe with your neighborhood and "hoody types" are taking over. Best to move to a better area and not wait and hope the neighborhood will improve. They never do once the "hoody" types move in.

I suspect that if carry any weapon you could be arrested. It is not worth it. Until recently I did carry a truncheon in my car but have now reluctantly removed it.

Ian UK
I wouldn't if I were you as that just makes the probelm worse. You also put yourself at risk of having your weapon turned on you.

I know one thing though, if you pulled your knife on me, I'd have the lawful authority to beat the living s**t out of you.

On no account should anyone carry a knife. Get in an argument lose your rag and you are most likely going to use the blade. If it goes wrong and you injure or even kill someone you will spend years in prison, In my view anyone caught in possesion of a knife should get an automatic jail sentence, it is no defence to say it is for personal protection.

louise a
no, dont do it, thtd make you as bad as all of the ppl tht allready do carry weapons. ppl that carry weapons are more likely to be hurt as you are more of a threat. if that person had a knife they still wouldve hurt him, maybe more ppl wouldve died. maybe he couldve killed some1 before they got him, would tht make it ok? its a cycle of violence. carrying a knife is not protection, it puts you at risk, and means one day you may use it, which youd have to live with tht. violence is not the answer to violence....how can it help? youd just be making it worse. i can understand that people can see tht it would protect thm, but i just cant see how carrying any kind of weapon can be justified. the problem needs to be adressed but i dnt think "protecting yourselves" is the way. we need a society of respect, ppl need to respect life. parents need to know whre there children are. if you carry a knife you are simply disrespecting life.

Not if the gang had taken his 12 inch knife and slowly inserted into his abdomen tearing muscle and flesh apart spilling his intestines all over the floor while he lost control of his bladder and bowels then slowly losing consciousness and finally death ....now do you want to carry a knife?

M S
no a knife can be used against you

gerry mac
Never carry a weapon, no real man needs a weapon to hold his own only ******* and cowards do so. Please I know what I'm talking about, more respect is due to the folk who refuse a knife and stand up in a Honourable way.If the fear is that great wear a vest, you know?

Mr. Goodhi
Yes,

it's better to be prepared than not.

I would bring a pocket knife, sharp, easy and quick to open, and the ones you can clip to your jeans. Should be around 50$ I believe.

Carry a tightly rolled up newspaper (that is all they are good for).

If attacked, never hit over the head, always up hard under the chin.

If plod turns up, you can always say you were reading the paper.

But never carry a knife or gun, you become an automatic target for all sides.

Salt&Pepper Apricot
No. But it is legal to learn Judo, Karate, etc.

"Would he still be alive if he had waved a razor sharp, 12 inch hunting knife at them? DISCUSS"

Probably not. Chances are these thugs had a gun.

Edit: To Chuckney, "Why are Americans answering this? We don't have gun laws like that in our country."

The poster did not say where he/she lives.

Taf
If you're outnumbered and you pull out a knife there's a high chance they'll take it off you and stab you with it.

Find something legal to carry. Keep the number to the local police station on your phone, but dial 999 if your sure your going to be assaulted. Go to the train station on a bicycle.

Chuckney
Why are Americans answering this? We don't have gun laws like that in our country.

I think if avoiding carrying one is at all possible, then do so. However you're not part of a gang, you obviously aren't a yob and it would only be for selfdefence so I say if you really think you need one, then do so. Try not to actually use it, though - violence doesn't solve violence. Use it as a threat and it should scare any prospective muggers away. Only use it as a last resort, if you honestly fear maiming or such.

You're right, arrest is better than death, I had never thought of it that way, but still make sure it is final, final resort - it is much better to try and avoid a confrontation. Always walk well lit streets where possible, try not to meet shady individuals' eyes but don't make it glaringly obviously that you're avoiding them either.

Best of luck and stay safe!

Michael C
I know you are seriously ill, whatever are you thinking of wanting to carry a knife for protection, if everyone took the same attitude we would be living in a siege situation, all frightened to go outside the door.

What nonsense your remarks about hoody's, if that young man in hackney had waved a knife back God knows what could have happened, you need to start growing up and act responsible.

YoYo
you should probably carry a gun with you instead of a knife
b/c the only way to protect your self while running away is from shooting from far away
other wise you would have to run the risk of getting close enough to them to hurt them but most likely still getting hurt yourself

Mordent
There are so many cons that it's not worth it in my opinion. You can be arrested yourself, you're more likely to be actually stabbed by someone if you draw your knife (they might have only been using it to threaten) and a weapon you don't know how to use belongs to your enemy.

However, I can understand your concern.

I'd say you'd be better off taking a martial art such as karate or judo. That way you will know how to defend yourself and be trained in doing so. Even a small amount of training can make all the difference.

angie n
never carry a knife, ask around to find a trust worthy person that Will meet you and take you home safely, don't let others change you into some thing your not

oxsiaaan
I can see where your coming from, it seems kinda scary to think about. But, most of the time, people get stabbed with their OWN knives. Think about how gutted you would be if that happened. Yes, it seems scary to think about people carrying these kind of weapons. But if you do it too, your just as bad. Hope you find the right solution!

If your in fear for your life carry a handgun, unless you are prohibited because of age or any convictions you could have. A knife is basically a hands on approach, and if you just show it someone they could call your bluff. You would be better with an expandable baton. They collapse down to 8 or 9 inches and expand out to as far as 31 inches. They are made of steel.
