Should people arrested for illegal drugs be given tougher punishments?

Are we doing enough on the war on drugs?

I say YES! People should be given tougher punishments for illegal drug use, possession or sale. So many crimes are committed because of drugs. Either the person was on drugs at the time or needed to get drugs. Society today uses it as a scapegoat. "Whoa as me, I killed a guy because I was high on drugs and I thought he was Jack the Ripper coming back from the dead". Stiffen penalties would be great. You can't "help" a druggie. They have to want help first. Most want help after they have been in jail for a few hours and then whine to their families about how much they will change if they will only bail them out. Then the family of friend that did so gets screwwed. I say make them take responsibility!

I dont think a person should just sit in jail for drug posession/sales, because 8 out of 10 will just get back into it when they get out. The thing is, the majority of persons who sell, dont use, and I think that if they were to go through something like a hard core bootcamp, for rehabilitation, for a designed amount of time, and then have a house arrest cuff on their ankle once they get out, made to also get a job, and abide by curfews, I think it may make them to think twice before they do it again.

Not for mere possession issues. That's overcrowding our prison system. I think Holland has the right idea...decriminalise it and take it out of that black market its sold through.
More people die because of THAT than they do from taking those drugs.

well the only difference in tougher punishments is they spend more jail time, they still get the drugs in jail.there is about 10 different gangs in the jail system, and they all have out side connections, its a little tougher to get the drugs but they do get them.

People who use, possess, or sell drugs are like people who commit every other crime. They all assume that they aren't going to get caught. Nobody is weighing out the benefits of selling drugs vs the number of years they will get if they are caught - if they thought they would actually be caught, they wouldn't do it.
In Islamic countries where they practice Shari'a, the punishment for any drug crime is death. And yet they still have drug traffickers! Do you think THEY need tougher punishments?

nope and it don have anything to do with the war on drugs it just has to do with trying to get people to give names to get out of charges and statistic says it does not work and also the person can be in danger

Just look to the countries that tolerate the possession and use of "ILLEGAL" drugs. Doesn't seem to be a problem does it? All it does here is support the lavish lifestyle of the shyster lawyers who are paid big buck by the taxpayers to "defend" these cases before the lock up phase. Then it really costs the taxpayer.

I think they should if it's a manmade drug. But if the earth grows it, why should we be subjected to punishment?

Lauren
NO! Unless they are marketing and distributing mass quantities. The jails are so full of drug addicts that there are no room for real criminals!

NO! It is a total disaster!
Do you really think that getting 20 years in prison for having had 2 oz of pot is not enough? That is insanity!
The DEA needs to be abolished, and drugs should be handled like the most common drug, alcohol.
And this from a non drug user, BTW.
Read 'The Natural Mind' by Dr. Andrew Weil. It has all the answers to this.
Are we doing enough? WE aren't doing anything that is RIGHT! THAT'S the problem!!!!

NO....but the cops that take the drugs for their own use should...

for any drug stronger than marijuana, jail time should be definately considered, but arresting individuals who possess vast amounts of marijuana is also neccessary, but i disagree with arresting people because they have marijuana that weighs as much as a feather, thats a waste of money n time
