Should people in prison not be allowed go to a funeral?
|
I was in prison last year when my Dad died. I got taken out to see him a few days before he died with a guard but they wouldn't take the handcuffs off and give me some time alone and I got a bit upset about this so when it came to the funeral I didn't get to go. I know I mouthed off but it just seems wrong that I didn't get to go his funeral and I still get angry just thinking back to what happened. I know I can't do anything about it now but I don't think it's right to make people miss out on a funeral just because I was upset.

Prison is not supposed to be a vacation place! Prison is where you go when you have broken a law/laws! I do not even think you should have been able to see him! That is the way I look at it.
If you are big enough to do the crime then you are big enough to suffer any consequences that come along with that crime. Including missing your fathers funeral!
Yes I am a bit harsh. But, It is not my job to pay for the extra security it takes to take your butt to the hospital nor funeral of your parent.
Hope you learned a valued lesson...on more than one level. |

I notice you don't mention the crime that put you in this situation?
As a Father and Grandad...I feel more sorry for your Dad. How disappointed must he have been.
Face up to it....no one has been cruel to you, you have been cruel to your own Father. Take responsibility.
I know this sounds hard, but reality often does. |

Well then you should have behaved. |

You were in custody. The cuffs were to keep you in custody. It sounds like your behaviour showed you couldn't be trusted to co-operate.
That you missed your fathers funeral was your choice and your fault, not anybody else's.
You could choose to co-operate with the authorities and earn the privilege of being at your father's funeral, or choose to 'mouth off' and relinquish that privilege. You decided that being able to vent your anger was more important than being at your father's funeral. Your choice. Now live with it. |

Sorry for the loss of your dad. However, I'm sure that your attitude (while understandable to an extend) is what led to you being unable to attend the funeral. Visiting a loved one in a hospital or going to a funeral is a privilege for a convict, not a right. I fully understand your position, but you have to remember that while in prison one has forfeited a lot of the basic liberties. I hope you can find peace within yourself and not feel guilty about missing the funeral. I'm sure your dad understands and knows that your heart was there. Good Luck! |

Folk are put in prison for a reason. I don't think they should be let out for any reason, until they've served their full punishment.
Otherwise it's not a deterrent. |

Let's think about this....you indicated, "I don't think it's right to make people miss out on a funeral just because I was upset." But, it was okay for you to break the laws and end up in jail.
You better be thanking God that you were able to see your dad a few days before he died because if it was up to me, you would not have. |

If prisoners were allowed to attend the funeral of their parents, then it would be their siblings, their cousins, play-parents, play-siblings, play-cousins, that neighbor who was always really friendly, that high school buddy who got you through that break-up; then you would need to go visit them all at home or in the hospital prior to their death, or attend their weddings, their graduations, their promotional parties, et cetera et cetera et cetera. So....why incarcerate in the first place? |

Sorry, but I am am struggling to be too sympathetic. You were sent down (which in itself these days takes some doing to actually do time) because you could not behave.
You were then allowed out under certain security restrictions (the Officers would not be well thought of if you had "legged it") which will have been incredibly expensive to cover by the staff. When they could not allow you private time, it sounds like you "kicked off"!
I think that they were right, you were wrong.
Like you say, you can't do nothing now, but I would suggest that if you want to honour the memory of your father, you might consider doing something that would make him proud. |

johN p. aka-Hey you.

I think it should be based on the crime that put you in prison in the first place. |

You're IN prison to learn how to behave.
You didn't.
However, I think banning you from your father's funeral was extreme. They should have come up with something else.
On the other hand, if you created a scene at the hospital, they might have been concerned that you'd do the same at the funeral - you didn't give details about that. |

I think it;'s more important that you went to see him before he died.
Still - it was a little bit mean of them. |

It does seem very irrational.
My sisters boyfriend is in Prison and it seems to me that some of the Guards are a bit too heartless, if you know what i mean.
Like, isn't being in prison enough, and by the sounds of it, the last time you saw your dad could have been better.
Why should you have been made to sit in a prison knowing that you should have been sayin a proper goodbye to your own father.
But the state of prison and they way that some inmates get treated is all down to the state of our Government in my opinion.
Is it not bad enough that whilst in Prison you miss out on seeing the lives of your family, seeing how everybody around is gorwing and turning into a wonderful person.
And just to top evrything off you can't say goodbye when it is their time to go.
Propsterous if you ask me.

Even though you misbehaved it is understandable that you were upset. You should have been allowed to attend the funeral, this was very callous behaviour on the part of the Prison Service. No matter what crime you were in prison for I feel this is inhumane treatment and I am not one of the pc brigade. I am so sorry that you lost your Dad. |
