I was eating at a local eatery with my dad. After eating in the parking lot, he had a heart attack and collapsed into the car. The hospital was only 1 mile away, so I decided to drive. When I turned the corner on approach to the hospital, the side road in my lane was all backed up, but no oncoming traffic, so with my flashers on I went in the wrong side of the road past all the stopped cars to the intersection. From the intersection I could see the E.R. entrance only half block away.
But a motorcycle cop was in the middle of the road. He told me I could not cross, even though I explained that my dad had a heart attack. He said that Al Gore's motorcade was coming down the road and I would have to wait for it to pass. The motorcade was no where in sight and the officer could not tell me how long the wait would be. I was tempted to ignore the cop and proceed. But instead, I turned around and went to another hospital some distance away. My dad was treated and was Okay.

I did drive safe and since he was already in the car was able to get there quicker then an ambulance.
By the way two weeks later, when President Clinton visited, an ambulance also was not allowed to cross. The patient died while waiting.
I wonder if motorcades should not be allowed to be routed past a major E.R. access?

Hmm...I don't know about that story. So, you told him your dad was having a heart attack and the cop didn't care? I think most cops would call despatch and have an ambulance come down that half a block to get your dad.
How far away was the other hospital? I would have gotten out of the car right there where you were stopped and called the ambulance. They wouldn't stop the ambulance coming across to get your dad. Plus I wouldn't risk wasting that amount of time driving to the other hospital. I'm not sure how far the other one was, but you make it sound far away. Ambulance 1/2 block away would take about 1-2 mins. to get to you.

Sometimes you should leave driving an emergency situation to pros(EMT,Paramedics, FF's etc). Not only do we do this everyday but we have lights and sirens to tell people to pull over. Not everyone does though. And you need to realize that most drivers don't care about where you have to go and how long you have to get there (heart attack or not). As for the cop in my opinion he was in the wrong. If i was the cop Al Gores parade could have waited. Reason for me saying even if the hospital is 2 miles away wait for help. One emergency is enough but that one heart attack could turn into a heart attack and a 4 car pile up. Hope your dad feels better good luck. |
