Should prison be strictly for punishment?

What are your thoughts on the prison system and how can it be greatly improved if not just for punishment?

It is a place to detain AND punish. I think we need to make it the worst place you can possibly be so that people avoid law breaking so they won't go there. |

Removing the liberal law makers out of the prison system alone would be a MAJOR step forward to making prisons a clear deterrent against crime.
When I hear prison inmates in my state are enjoying TWO wide screen TV sets, satellite TV PLUS DVD movies (on weekends), then I sense a red flag something has gone wrong with the system; I'm sure there are other insulting inmate privileges going on right now elsewhere in the US.
Liberal prison reform over the past 38 years has FAILED....miserably. Guilty criminals sneer at judges sentencing them to years prison time because they either heard it's not so bad on the "inside" or they already been there and know it's a lay-out. |

The existing prison system is self-propagating- there should be an element of punishment but rehabilitation should also be a major part. I work with young offenders and have a couple in particular who have gotten out of the criminal cycle through seeing what it was like followed by support and mentoring when they get out and a case worker while inside. This programme resulted in 8% less reoffending when they got out. For a good look at what rehabilitation can achieve check out Erwin James work, which he wrote from personal experience as a lifer, and the diference between justice and revenge. |

I kinda like the fact that it has replaced the old Mental Institutions! This way when a person is sentenced for the CRIME THEY HAVE COMMITTED, THEY ARE ALSO COMMITTED! This goes along with the old saying, "Anyone who commits a criminal offense is fu*king nuts!" |

Rehabilitation. Education. Make it more like college.
so people come out with good skills to support themselves in the middle class. |

I agree that rehabilitating should be a focus of the penal system. However, there are certain people who either are beyond rehabilitation, or have committed crimes that will make them ineligible to rejoin society. For these people, prison should be 100% about punishment. |

It should be for punishment, not recreation. There is way too much "stuff" to do in prison that people would rather live in prison than somewhere else. |

The idea that prison is a punishment is a myth.
People are placed in prison to isolate them from the law abiding citizens.
People that are in prison, still run there criminal enterprises from behind bars. They learn new ways to build weapons, fighting techniques. People in prison are considered gods by there counterparts on the street because the people in prison know how to survive in prison and keep there mouth shut about the criminal enterprises that are going on in the streets.
Someone that has been in prison for at least 5 years usually gets released onto the streets as a more vicous and more cunning and more successful criminal, based on what he has been taught in prison.
Prison is not punishment. It is a college for criminals. |

first I'd say ebony is a nice looking girl, prison is for punishment and compared to yesteryear's except for the "super-maxes",has become to light on punishment, why else do so many of released people returning to crime, many within months of release. lock-em up throw the key away, esp rapists and child molesters-no three strikes with those two crimes, do it once your gone, course that's just my thought |

possibly you are specifying the american prison system but you are not clear on that so I couldn't comment
I can think of several reasons for imprisoning someone, Punishment
Deterent
Rehabilitation
Protection of society
of those reasons protection of society and deterent rank higher than punishment and rehabilitation in my opinion |

I think marijuana should be legalize, it could fund our education system and reduce the number of small time criminals in our system and also the death penalty needs to make a come back. If you kill and they die, you fry. |

Ideally, prison would be for rehabilitation as well as punishment. To accomplish rehabilitation, prisons would need a lot more resources than they have, to be a lot less crowed than they presently are, and all that would be very expensive. |

detainees must work as much as possible (like hard physical labour ) and pay their debt to society. they also need to pay for prison expenses
if they have free time left, they must follow courses on how to reintegrate society . there must be a place where they learn that criminal acts lead to nowhere and honest, good, and hard work bear its fruits. |

In this country, it did not start out that way. The word "penitentiary" comes from doing penance. The Quakers built the first correctional facility. In it, the people were to read the Bible, pray, consider their wrong-doings and repent. Later, they became strictly forms of punishment (see "Coolhand Luke"); then there were honest attempts at reformation of the individuals; now they are primarily warehouses and schools of crime. Is there a better way? God, I hope so, but I'm not seeing it in the immediate future. |

I believe so, it shouldn't be a easy time for anyone. Although I do believe that prison should also help prisoners learn a trade/craft as this should help lower the re offending rates, which hear in England are quite high. |
