Should prisoners have three square meals a day, T.V., games rooms etc.?

Surely prisoners shouldn't have all these luxuries, doesn't sound like punishment to me, doesn't sound like a deterrent either. Except for freedom, don't they have a better lifestyle than some pensioners say. Additional Details Having read through 50 answers, it seems to me that prisoners in the U.S.A. are treated more severly than ones here in the U.K. Over here paedophiles are placed in open prisons and then escape, we recently 'lost' scores of immigrant murderers and rapists who were released back into society to re-offend when they were supposed to be deported. In the U.K. criminals sometimes have more rights than theyr'e victims. A prisoner is now suing the Home Office because he fell off of his top bunk, it infringed his human right apparently. What about the human rights of the victims of crime or do the bleeding heart lobbyists have no thought for them. Makes you wonder.

do you really think the system or gov. for that matter supplies tv to prisoners? NOT. most inmates do have someone on the outside who are willing to send them money thus just like you they get to buy at the inmate store. LIKE A TV. most of you people have no conception of prison-- punish them--sorry that sentence was handed down by the judge-- now their doing TIME. Prison food--gag me. they certainly do not eat steak-- their fav. meal is chicken. how would you like someone telling you what time to turn in, wake up, be escorted to meals, answerable for every action,move/jesture. prison is no camp and certainly if you have never been there you cannot imagine a fraction of it. sorry folks i am not sticking up for the joint but your disullisioned if you think its a free ride and inmates have all kinds of luxuries. just not so. perhaps for those who are so hep on minimal food/water/medical care--- you had better look up the prison reform act of 1969. your eyes just may be opened. |

I'm not a fan of luxuries for prisoners but I can see where dominoes, chess, etc. are soothing, not a riot inducer. I don't think TV should be allowed until a person is nearing their parole date, at which time it would be good to let them know what's up in the world. I doubt their sleeping arrangement pleases them much. Three squares is fair enough, especially since if they aren't sentenced to death we are not allowed to kill them by starvation. Even if they ARE sentenced to death, that is a means of execution that is cruel and tortuous.
I'm far more a fan of reducing prison overcrowding by executing all who killed, with deliberation. I also believe that pedophiles need executed.....the first time. |

Yes they should. I worked in the prison system, and they are given tv time to keep inmates calm and occupied. You try walking into a dorm with 50 or more inmates pissed off because they have no means of entertainment or stress relief. Being a correctional officer in a prison is a dangerous job and taking away food and entertainment from inmates only makes it that much harder. Trust me. |

i think prisoners should be supplied with the basic necessities for living. they should be given their meals. but as for occupying their time, they should only be limited to doing something productive for themselves and society, ie, receiving counseling, taking classes, working. no tv, no games. |

You know with your way of thinking you should do yourself and everyone else a favor, ask you local sheriff or state prison warden if you could stay for a week then see if you will ask the same question, it's bad enough their liberty is taken away and all their loved ones for maybe one bad incident or use of logic then know take everything away, oh yeah your a real winner...... |

They need put in a cell, and left. You can feed them by conveyor belt, or other neat contraption. Why let them have anything? Why let them do anything? keep them in the cage they EARNED. |

Yes, they do, which is why some criminals break the law on purpose because they know they will have a place to live. If you've seen the Shawshank Redemption, that is a perfect example of how some people are unable to function outside of prison walls...that is, after they've been locked up for many years. |

They should have basic human needs only.
A cell each containing a bed, a toilet, a sink & nothing else. They should be allowed to exercise for 1 hour per day, have 3 meals a day in their cells & given menial work to do for 8 hours per day (with no pay). They should be given pens, paper & an allotted amount of stamps each week. Lights out at 9pm.
They are there to be punished not live in better conditions than if they were still on the outside. |

Grow up you sad fool. How old are you 6? 'Except for freedom...' - oh that little detail! But yeah I guess you are right they get treated like kings and queens. It really is disgusting, 3 square meals did you say, dear me!
Why don't we kill them all? Or beat them and torture them everyday? They're all evil scum anyway - right? There are some poor folks who have to live in luxury every day and all THEY did was rob, exploit and murder their way around the globe, they call them corporate executives, share dealers, politicians. Whilst at the same time millions more around the globe get to starve and die from treatable diseases. Life is so unfair aint it? |

I totally agree. They are supposedly being punished, where's the punishment? Like you said, they have a better lifestyle inside than most pensioners. More money gets spent on 1 prisoner than 1 pensioner on a weekly basis. It's immoral!!! |

Yes and no. Three meals a day, but bread and water, maybe a small chocolate bar if they are really good.
They shouldn't get TV's or a games room. I don't mind them having a library do go in for an hour. They should spend the majority of the day locked in a small cell.
People will think this idea is Draconian. However I ask for an open mind. Criminals forfeit their human rights the second they go against someone elses by hurting them or killing them.
Try sitting in a room a doing nothing. You'll go mad in an hour. Criminals should be forced to do that for the whole day and night, to think about the crime they have committed. That is punishment. |

In MD prisons, 5 inmates and guards have been killed this year.
One inmate escaped by shooting his guard with his own gun.
Two inmates got together and murdered another guard while the prison was in lockdown.
Prisoners have nothing to do, so their minds idle away until they act out with violence. |

I'm dutch, so over here it sound more like a paid holiday then anything else. How hard I also want a person to really suffer when a crazy offence was committed, The basic things in live they should be entitled to, why you ask? Well if you take away all basic things from someone, a person tends to get even more angry at the world, and yes that is any ones problem when he gets out.Treating them like a human, might lead to get insight of what he/she had done, and taking away the chance of having an excuse for his/hers behaviour.
Taking away someones freedom, is already the worst thing in life. Even if you have all the luxury in the world... that's a fact!
When someone goes into jail, you don't want a frustrated mentally even more confused coming out now do we?
The logical way to think is that we sort of shut the door, and throw away the key, and if it concerned me or my loved ones, I would want him/her dead! We are not allowed to kill someone, so we won't. But think about it, in most cases "revenge" if you want to call it, is making it hard for someone to blame anything for it, and hope that he'll live to be 100, he/she has also to look in the mirror each day... |

They should have no luxuries at all. How does 3 meals a day, TV, etc. etc. deter people from committing crimes??? It doesn't. They should be given hard labour and made to suffer for what they've done. |

If you have ever seen the movie Murder In The First, you will see what happens when you don't treat prisoners with respect and dignity. The point of prison is to deny freedom as a punishment and to hopefully one day rehabilitate. In all but the most extreme cases, we should aim for this.
Poverty within the elderly is about lack of Government funding for pensions and is a separate issue entirely. |

You should try prison and then tell me what pensioners have it worse. Prison is to take people out of scociety because they cannot obey the rules that scociet lives by its not to torture them. Yes they should have three squares a TV and game room and its still a long way from an idyllic life style. |

Bring in bread, water, hard bunk and hard labour.
If I did wrong, I'd expect to get punished.

Yes. As long as the criminals are not in society.
If the pensioners are that jealous they could always go on a crime spree and get the same. |

i think they should have the meals because they need that to survive but when you hear about the luxuries they get? i think its absolutely horrific. all you people sayin its, you have someone murder a child and then tell me its ok. I mean, look at the killers of jamie bulger. they had luxuries which a lot of single parents, pensioners, general people cant afford then they spent how much giving them a new identity/life - did they deserve that. er NO. why the hell did they even let them out?
god, u commit a serious crime - u practically get rewarded. |

I wonder which prison you have seen the inside of?
Prisoners with serious offences to be paid for live in a world where their personal identity is taken away from them on a moment by moment basis and one where peace and quiet is replaced by the torment of constant noise.
Even if all the things you mention are granted, and they rarely are, they are not luxuries, they are a small deterrent to stop them slipping into madness.
As to prisoners with minimal offences, I cannot say knowing nothing about their prisons. |
