Yes. This country was based on the idea of innocent until proven guilty. Also, this right is guaranteed by the US constitution. A "suspect" is not necessarily guilty. Police frame people, people make false accusations etc., DA 's press cases for political reasons -- it's amazing how many people do not understand this.
Interesting how all answers are yes so far. Put the word "terrorist" in front of the word "suspects" in your question and seeing if you got the same result would be interesting. |

Absolutely they should have the right to consult with a lawyer. If you are a suspect, you better get a lawyer. |

Its not my opinion, its the Constitutions. Do you have any idea how easy it would be to have abuse of power without an attorney?
Dang, you guys are the most trusting bunch, always thinking it can't happen to you, |

Yes. Suspect or not you should always have the right to consult an attorney. |

Yes and they have those rights |

yes. If they are suspects, than obviously no one has discovered who the real criminal was. So, then the suspect should receive some help in the proving of their innocence (that is, if they are innocent). |
|

Of course. They should know their rights in case they are charged with the crime they are suspected of. |

Sure do. But even after they consult with their attorney, if they are half way intelligent they still talk to the police. What do you think the attorney is going to do? He is going to ask the police what kind of deal can he get if he gets his client to talk. So instead of spending thousands of dollars on a lawyer, just talk to the police. |

LIKE YOU SAID SUSPECTS. HOW DO YOU DEFEND YOURSELF IF YOU DON'T HAVE AN ATTORNEY ? SO IF YOU GET ARRESTED YOU GO TO JAIL NO MATTER WHAT. EVEN IF YOUR INNOCENT. WITH NO LEGAL RECOURSE. THIS IS NOT A THIRD WORLD NATION WITH OUT LAWS. IN THIS COUNTRY YOU ARE INNOCENT UNTIL PROVED GUILTY. THAT FORM OF LAW YOU ARE SPEAKING ABOUT SOUNDS LIKE COMMUNISM AT IT'S WORST. |

Of course, innocent until proven guilty. These measures were put in place to protect people in the case that they may not be guilty of the crime of which they are being accused of. |

Yes. Especially if they're innocent and don't look like it. Our society is based on equality/equal protection. Benjamin Franklin said (paraphrased) that it is better to have 100 guilty men on the street than to have one innocent man in jail. The gov't cannot deprive a citizen of life liberty, or the persuit of happiness without due process. Attorneys protect that. |

Yes, just because you are a suspect, that does not mean that you are guilty of a crime. The legal system is still good because it allows somebody on trial the right to get an attorney, but that is about the only thing it is good for. |

If you are not arrested, you don't have to say anything to the police. And if you are arrested, you still don't have to say anything without an attorney present (MIranda Law). |

Been There~Done That!

Unfortunately they have the right to an attorney just as much as you do. |

Usually, they can do that by talking through the bars to the person in the next cell. |

legally they can. but if they aren't on trial then it wouldn't make much sense. |

Victory !

Of course not. This is the New American Century.
Suspects shall be held without charges indefinitely, without a hearing, without the right to counsel, without knowing the reason they are being held and should be tortured into confessing. Everyone knows if they were innocent, they never would have been arrested.
Come on people, it works for terrorist suspects. Right ? |
