Should the UK bring back hanging or do killers need more understanding ?

to all them that will say prison is to soft and hangings the only way, then why did shipmen and fred west die in such a nasty way rather than spend the rest of there lifes behind bars.

In cases where guilt & premeditation can be proved beyond a shadow of a doubt, yes, bring back capital punishment. These prisoners cost thousands of pounds to keep in an already overcrowded penal system.

Shipman and Fred West hanged themselves because they couldn't live with what they'd done!

I think this: Criminals should get a sentence that fits the crime, example, murderers spend the rest of their days rotting in prison, i.e, they take a life, they spend theirs in prison, child molesterers should, (and this is only what I think) be castrated WHILE being awake during the operation! He'd never do it again, as he would die from the pain and shock of not being under! And Rapists should be counter-raped!

Problem with hanging someone is that it's too late if it turns out they're innocent after all. Prior to the last hanging in 1967 there were a few innocent people who were killed.

If the guilty person admits their guilt then execute them and likewise if the evidence is overwhelming but not when sentence is passed based on a 'balance of probabilities'.

The Shipman case is awkward - in many of the killings he thought he was doing the right thing. In others it was just to benefit from their wills and in others it was a display of power. Clearly the man was both criminally and mentally insane. Fred West was just an evil man and so was his wife - did you see the pictures of her - move over Freddy Kruger here comes Rose West.

Modern forensics and the need for more conclusive evidence greatly reduces the chance of an unsafe or innocent conviction but there is still the possibility of making a mistake.

Perhaps the answer lies in locking these people up for 24 hours a day in solitary cells with nothing but a toilet and some books to read but I guess that would be against their human rights.

Don't you think the gibbet'd still be around if it were actually a deterrent?

The debate surrounding the death penalty in the UK has been finally and irrevocably sealed to the History books by Tony Blair. It is now unlawful in the UK for a future government to re-introduce the death penalty following TB's signature on the Human rights document that effectivelly removed justice from the Hands of the British courts. So do Killers need more understanding, NO. They are unsafe homicidal maniacs for the most part unable to function within the bounds of the law. They should always be put to death when found guilty by a Jury of thier peers. The guilt for a mistrial and all the other rubbish about mis-carriage of Justice from the Fifties and Sixties has been eradicated by vastly superior crimanal detection and modern irrefutable evidence such as DNA. So when you are "fingered" for the act you are as guilty as it is possible to be. And if Murder was the crime you have forfeit the right to leniency and compassion. Murderers show none and so deserve none.

You cannot be a member of the EU and have capital punishment. It simply cannot be done. If you want to get Britain thrown out and almost certainly have sanctions imposed against us, just so you can meet out mob justice on people who are only PROBABLY guilty (look at the rate of wrongful convictions for a start) then sure, go ahead. And what if the victim was later proved to be innocent? Is it murder because they were executed? Should we therefore hang the executor?

Peter M
Firstly, we (the UK) are to all intents and purposes still a Christian country (although I myself am an atheist), and therefore it must be assumed that to take the life of another human being is wrong. So, if murder is wrong, it is wrong, whether carried out as a crime or as a form of judicial retribution.

The death sentence should be re introduce, so long as there is no shadow of doubt that the person is guilty of murder, raping of children or murder of a law enforcement officer. It would save the country millions in keeping them in jail and free up prison cells for more minor offence's. The one thing I'd like to see is they are executed in the same manor as their victim, so they would know what pain they had caused that person.

I think that they should bring back hanging for a certain level of crimes.......as for Fred West and Shipman, IMO they hung them selves as they was a HUGE target within the prison system and then added into that they truly felt they where above the law...note both these men carried out heinous deeds over a period of MANY years, so they took the cowards way out. Of course with all the influence of the court of human rights in the UK legal system these days I am surprised that the UK can even lock up some one, so doubt that capital punishment will EVER be brought back.

In some ways I object to paying through my taxes for scum like Ian Huntley and Rosemary West to be fed and clothed and spend their lives in jail, and would like to see them hung.

In other ways I think that if it is wrong for them to murder then its wrong for the law to kill them, plus death is the easy way out for them.

Let them rot in jail with no freedom or priviledges in the knowledge of what they did, knowing they will never be released. Make them work for their keep and give them nothing but basic food, water and clothing. No TVs, exercise yard and education classes.

I personally believe that once a human being is at the point when their mind and soul can justify the act of ending another persons life, then they are already lost souls that can never undo the action they, by many different reasons were brought to do. I know that a new born baby is a gift of life but on the day it arrives in this world it does not for-see the teachings and horrors of a modern world in which it will have to survive and, for its education will develop into a product of the environment and society in which it will live. Killers should be given a choice of either ending their life and hope that in their next life they can live it without their pain and torment and given a chance to feel true love and exist on this planet or let them choose a life behind real society in jail where they don't experience all the feelings of freedom,love,companionship,normality,etc...

Criminals know what is right and wrong but usually dont care enough about the social consequences.

If going to prison is only about punishment then why not just save the money and hang every criminal a few minutes after their trial.

Prison should be about the rehabilitation and a full re-education of an offender. They should understand the social consequences of breaking the law.

hangings too old fashioned... gun line or a Hostel/Saw re-inactment

Because that is the new way the authorities bump prisoners off. In prison, the night.

Capital punishment is not what civilised nations should do. If they must execute, then lethal injection is the only humane way. Being hanged is a carry over from times past which has no place now.
