Because any time you hear of a Rifle such as an AR-15 or AK variant being used in a crime it is usually by someone who, by law, is prohibited to own, much less possess one.

Creating another law on top of existing laws that make the ownership or possession illegal of any firearm in the first place is not going to stop someone who, by nature ignores the law in the first place.

Tell me how this will work? I'd love to hear how.

As an American Citizen, without a criminal history, I should be allowed or rather, should not be prohibited from owning ANYTHING I want to own.

If that trust is misused, then the brick wall needs to fall, but until then, the right is guaranteed in the Bill of Rights.

The second amendment has no caveats concerning the looks or types of arms to be kept and used by the people. " A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."
If anything, the AK-47, AR-15, and other such military weapons are the very weapons that law abiding persons SHOULD have in their arsenals.

The underlying problem with limiting and regulating gun ownership is that only law abiding citizens who respect the law will abide by the law. For example, we have a law that says it is a crime to car-jack a car. Law abiding citizens understand this and do not car-jack cars. On the other hand, criminals who car-jack cars are not restrained by the car-jacking laws. Their motives are evil to begin with and the law only impacts those who respect the law. Outlawing AK-47's or any other weapon will only prevent law abiding citizens from owning them; it will not lessen their presence among the criminal element.

Of course not. Owning a gun and not doing unlawful things means that you are working under the law. The type of weapon is irrelevant.

SEMI-automatics shouldn't be restricted at all. It doesn't matter what it "looks" like. Just because a semi-automatic rifle is made to "look" like an AK-47 doesn't magically make it anymore dangerous than any other semi-automatic. Real AK-47s are FULLY automatic and can spray bullets with a single pull of trigger. These types of firearms are already heavily restricted and anything newer than 1987 is outlawed from civilians.

No, it shouldn't! I don't use such guns much if any, but I want to have the option if I should need them. You should read the Second Amendment.

First off, an AK-47 is not a semi-automatic, it is a selective fire firearms capable of full automatic fire and those firearms are covered under another set of very restrictive regulations.

The firearms of which you refer are identical to many popular hunting rifles in respect to function. The only differences are the cosmetics such as pistol grips, bayonet lugs, flash suppressors, etc. The "scariness" factor is in the eye of the beholder, not a quantifiable value. A semi-auto rifle dressed up to resemble a military firearm is no more dangerous than a hunting rifle with the identical firing system with a wooden stock. Outlawing them is a ridiculous concept, akin to outlawing certain cars because they look faster.

I would never call an AK-47 a big gun, it is designed as a limited range gun. In comparison to a full power gun such as an FN47, it is almost a toy. The AK-47's 7.62x39 round is classed as a medium power cartridge. It is not as powerful as the most common deer cartridge, the 30/30.

It is only the fear that has been generated by the liberal anti gun media that has created questions such as yours. You have been told that these guns are bad for so long and so many times that you are starting to believe.

As a small point, there are very few true AK-47s in this country, and they are very expensive, in the range of $15,000.00. This is because all true AKs are selective fire, and very tightly controlled under federal law. For those of you who do not know, selective fire means that there is a switch on the gun that allows the choice between semi auto and full auto. There are however lots of semi auto only copies of the AKs in this country, but to the true collector, they just don't count.

If it is the availability of the Russian AK-47 (1947 is the year of original make that is the 47 brand) that makes it the worlds most sought after weapon.
The AK - 47 is easy to fire, maintain, is durable, with a NATO standard round of 7.62 x 39mm or the M43 cartridge and is cheap in comparison to other weapons..
The AK-47 has a 600 rnd fire rate per min but only carried 3 options of fire.
A 75 rnd drum, a 30 rnd box magazine and a 45 rnd clip.

I like my guns, but I have no use for a gun like the AK-47 or M-16. I fear 'sweepers' because bullets have no eyes and no conscience. I have my shot gun, my hunting rifle and my piece of mind by being insured with Smith and Wesson if my home gets invaded. Like I said, I have no use for anything more!

You know the answer...of course it should be outlawed. I am not in favor of guns for those who can do harm. There must be a thorough check before he/she can buy a handgun or single shot rifle. No automatic guns to be sold to citizens.

Edit: Hmm, I thought this question was a joke and am surprised to see real debate here, until I researched this and found out that many types of weapons are actually LEGAL in the US. You guys are from a messed up country. If it is no problem to buy a gun, then why was it when I was in Kentucky a few years back, we had to drive 40 minutes to find a store that sold beer because selling beer was ILLEGAL! So much for the land of the free.
