yes, build more prisons. It is the best deterrent against crime. These prisons however should be less namby-pamby and alot tougher mirroring those in the US. The perks and the luxury life should be removed from our prisons. It would save much more of the tax payers money, therefore allowing more prisons to be built. |

absolutely. I was burgled a few weeks ago by a next door neighbour. We caught him in the house at five in the morning. The police were very good and he was carted off. He is in prison now expected three years, BUT, if he admits the offence, which he would be stupid not too, then he gets a year knocked off that. So that leaves two years of which he will only do half off that. Then with good behaviour he will end up doing 8 Months. Its a joke. He has terrorized the neighbourhood, robbing and threatening. My point is this, the economy would drift along sweetly without idiots like him. He cost the stability of peoples lifes and that is un-acceptable. Throw them inside and do us hard working people a favour |

I think they probably cost so much in prison because they have so much. They should have the bare minimum food, drink only water and have to sit all the time in little cells - not mixing with each other. Maybe then they would think about what they have done! |

Your thought might work. Personally I'd like to trade the electric chair for an electric sectional.
"Convicts, party of 10, your seats are warm and ready for you..."
<ZAAAAAAPPPPPPPP>
"Convicts, party of 10, your seats are warm and ready for you..."
Cost of an Electric Sectional-$25,000
Shorten the appeals process-$1,000,000-30,000,000.
Zapping violent scumbags into oblivion- Priceless. |

build more prisons by all means but lets treat them as prisoners not as guests in a top class hotel all these do gooders saying they have rights what right have they got to burgle rape and murder innocent folk
All these do gooders obviously have not been burgled or robbed if so they would soon change there attitudes lock them up and take away there rights and freedom |

First step, kill all of those on death row. They were sentenced to death, put them to death. Then put it in the books that anyone that takes the life of another is automatic death penalty. None of this pleading insanity getting life garbage. Start doing that, and you will see a decrease in the prison population making it so we won't need more prisons. |

Personal opinion: Non-violent property crimes should be punished by double restitution: the convict returns what was stolen twice. Example: I steal your $100, I must return $200. I steal your car, I have to give it (or one just like it) back, plus the value of it. I defraud you of $50,000 in a stock swindle, I have to give back $100,000.
Imprisonment for nonviolent property crimes is counterproductive. It doesn't get back what the victim lost, and the prison time costs the taxpayer to house, feed, clothe, medicate, and guard the perp.
So they're scumbags. Let 'em fix the problems they cause, and not become bigger problems. |

Everyone complains when they read a story about some criminal not being sent to prison, so yes we need to make more space for them. I don't care about the cost, it's about protecting our children so it's money well spent. As for the effect on the economy, well 99% of them are on benefit anyway so we will make a saving there towards their up-keep. Build away I say. |

That's not the answer.... I say make them all join the army, they will come back reformed characters. |

building more prisons ain't the answer. once a prisoner is institutionalized then the problem ain't ever gonna be solved.
while most people dont believe in GOD what has it done for the community? Its made a bunch of Godless crooks that we have to feed and house .I say they should be put to work, not lay around rotting in a cell. they need education, they need GOD, what they have now is the devil. |

britain already has the most prisons in europe, most prisoners, and longest sentences,it costs £38ooo a year to keep a prisoner out of that £1.38 pence a day to feed a prisoner, bear in mind prisoners do all the work in the prisons, cooking cleaning, maintenance, gardening etc,and a lot of prisons make profit from selling things prisoners have made or produced, the average prisoner gets £8.00 a week wages, which he normally has to spend in the prison canteen on things such as toothpaste because what prisons supply is not really fit for humans, the canteens are profit making, they say that is to teach prisoners how to budget and pay for things when they are released,if you are lucky enough to earn the privelige of having a tv £1.00 a week is deducted for this,if youve been in for a year youve probably bought that tv,but you dont get to keep it,all this is just the tip of the iceberg |

Costs £700+ plus each week for each one. On the other hand, they probably cost us as much on the out anyway! So who knows?
And the law is on their side! Courtesy of our brilliant police who fitted up so many people that PACE had to be enacted to control them. Big thanks to you boys in blue. Now you can't even make it stick on the villains!! Thick or what..
As to some of you barmy Yankee answerers, God help us. Hitler had more humanity than you & Genghis Khan was quite a nice chap really.. |

Building more prisons is an answer! The police catch the criminals put alot of effort, time and money in catching them, but to find that the CPS, throw the cases out because there is not enough room in our prisons which is very bad news for victims and their families. The government take more and more money off us with our taxes etc, why can't we have more prisons? |

Prisons are not overcrowded because of murderers and pedophiles. The problems stem from some of the "Tough-On-Crime' legislation that established "minimum sentencing guidelines" that make it possible for a first offender to get 12 to 20 years for having less than 5 grams of cocaine. Politicians in effect, tied the hands of judges and prosecutors and took away common-sense and alternative sentences.
If you emptied our prisons of low-level dealers and possessors, not the kingpins and suppliers, there would be enough bed-space created to effectively "build" 60 state prisons nationwide. |
|

Budge
 |
Why not? Build as many as it takes to get these neanderthals of the streets. Then increase the length of sentences and introduce the three strikes and you are out (or should I say in - forever). Life should mean exactly that. Oh yes and re-introduce hard labour. Does it really matter how much it costs if it improves life for the decent people in society who, like my wife and I, dare not walk down the High Street in our town after dark. In any case think of the employment it would create for builders and then prison warders. |
|

there would be no teenagers on the streets then. why not just increase school leaving age, create more jobs thats a start isnt it for the so called scumbags. |

You don't need to build more prisons they just need to bring in execution for paedophiles and murderers would save tax payers lot more money and prisons would be nearly empty! |

Yes, we should lock up all the scumbags. Bush, Blair, Sugar, Gates and all the rest of the selfish greedy little scumbags that keep everything for themselves and their friends while huge tracts of humanity are scratching in the dirt for food and shelter.
I say lock up everybody with personal wealth in excess of £250 million and make greed a crime against humanity. This would have a wonderful effect on the economy as millions of people would have lots more money to spend on goods and services which would create millions of jobs. |
