he recently got a letter from the IRS saying that he owes $10,000 in taxes, and list a company in another state that supposedly he has been working but its not him!!! someone else is working under his name and using his social security number, so hes very worried because he doesn't have that kind of money. in the paper he got it says that if he doesn't agree with that he can send a copy of his taxes, but hes wondering that's the only thing he can do right now? who will end up paying all that money? anyone with some info about this will help us a lot thanks!

First answer was good and had a good link.
He definitly needs to call them and make sure the letter is actually from the IRS. With his documents like a license, DMV records, payroll records, lease or mortgage records and all of this sort of thing it should not really be that big of a deal.
He should though get a credit report. Getting a police report is a good idea. That way if something has happened or does happen on that front he will have evidence that it was not him. A pain for sure but better safe than sorry. |

Call a lawyer, sounds like Identity theft, also should be reported to the sate police. Also, should look up creditreport.com as they may be able to go over all his credit history, to see when this first started. This is going to a very long process. It is happen a lot. But it has to be taken care of. |

that sounds like a scam. the irs doesnt need you to send THEM your taxes, they already have them since theyre the ones who send it to you.
are you sure that letter he was sent actually has his ENTIRE social on it and hes not being tricked into mailing someone his social? |
