Can anyone tell me what the statute of limitations is in Virginia for a charge of Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle. The charge is a felony. My girlfriend & I had a big fight. I was intoxicated (and so was she) & I begged her to drive me home. She refused & after begging her more she threw the keys to her cousin & told him to give me the keys so I could drive myself home. I drove myself home even though I knew I had no license but hey I was drunk & wasn't thinking right--my home was about 30 minutes away. Anyway the next day she called me & demanded that I return the car. I refused because I don't have a license and I was now very sober and I told her to come get her car. She got upset and didn't come get the car for 5 days (I guess she couldn't find anyone to give her a ride) and my neighborhood in D.C. is bad. When she came for her car, someone had vandalized it and it had quite a few tickets. Anyway I was unaware that she called the police and claimed I stole the car--this was a year ago. I did not steal the car, she had her cousin give me the keys! Any advice?

Wah hoo for freedom has some very reasonable/logical advice in this case. Unfortunately for you, Virginia is one of seven states that has NO statute of limitations for felonies. |

plead not guilty and call her cousin as a witness. if you get charged with driving without a license. plead guilty, its a misdemeanor while car theft is a felony. Call her as a witness also and demand on the stand to know how you got the keys. . |

if that was a year ago i really doubt you could be charged, your word against hers and like above guy said, make her tell how you got the keys, good luck |
