Suspended sentence of a 'mother'?

A woman who left her daughters home alone when she went to Spain on holiday has been spared a prison sentence. The South Wales woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was sentenced to 26 weeks in prison, suspended for 18 months.

What does a suspended sentence mean. will she serve 26 weeks in 18 months time or will the sentence have expired after 18 months.

It means if she gets into any trouble with the police over the next 18 months she will have to do her 26 weeks in prison plus anything time for the new charge as well. After the 18 months it expires.
