Swiss army knife?

is it illegal to carry a swiss army knife(concealed -of course) in public?

It is an offence to have in your possession in a public place any article which is sharply pointed or has a blade. The exception is a folding pocket knife where the blade is less than 3" in length. It does not matter if it is concealed.
If you intend to use it as a weapon it is an offence no matter the length if the blade. |

No it is not illegal to carry a Swiss Army knife, concealed in a pocket or bag.
The Swiss Army knife is considered a tool, as in 'tool of the trade'. A Tradesman or person, may legally carry the tools of his trade, including knives, in public.
If stopped and searched by the police in UK and a Swiss Army knife is found on the person, it is very unlikely the police will claim it to be a weapon. Such an accusation is very unlikely to stand up in court, even with a crap lawyer running your defence. |

Depends on what state you are in. It is fine in Arizona, Texas it might not be. |

only if the blade exceeds 3 inches length but if you get stopped and searched they might be a bit funny with you |

if your in the UK i think any blade over 3 inches is illegal. any type of quick opening knife such as a butterfly or flick knife is definately illegal. but even a lock knife 3 inches and under is ok legally (i'm no expert on the law so i may be wrong). anyway if a cop took your hubby to task for having a swiss army knife, whats your hubby going to do with it. tin open somebody to death, attack them with a mini file and rasp them to death. i thinks he safe to carry it. wherever i work i allways have a lock knife, one time this ******** of a manager tried to tell me "under health and safety blah blah blah i hereby issue you blah blah blah" as i was sharpening it on an oilstone. i told go him go ahead and try and take it ******** and while your at it you can take the cooks 10 inch carving knife as well. a knife can be a tool of work and a life saver. |

depends on the country you are in,

From my understanding, and this may change from state to state, but a blade on a swiss army knife is not long enough to be considered a weapon, and it is considered to be a tool.
This is why I am confused when I heard about the high school student that was arrested for having one in his car. |

No. A switch blade may be in some states. |

They've always been regarded as more of a tool than a weapon.. but things change.
Best thing is to call your local police they know what is and isn't acceptable legally and in your area. |

depends on where you live, the rules differ, ask someone in law enforcement about local rules |

Yes unless that public place is a school or someplace with no tolerance on weapons. But just outside, downtown or something it is perfectly fine. The rule of thumb is that the blade can be no longer than the size of your palm. Unless you are Shaq. No longer than the size of the average mans palm. The actual amount of inches varies from place to place. But a swiss army knife is accepable everywhere where some knives are acceptable. |

This is a weapon.
It has to do with intention. If it's shown in court that you intended to use it offensively (for instance you were with a gang who were all carrying knives), yes you could be prosecuted. The prosecution must show that you "intended to use the article for causing injury". |

I would think it wold be OK. It seems to alright when it comes to other 'pocket' knives. Maybe local laws come into play |

You have to be able to prove - if stopped with a Swiss army knife on you - that you are about to use it for a specific purpose, - you are going camping, fishing, to do a hobby etc. Otherwise you should not be carrying it - to carry a Swiss army knife 'just in case' is not a case you could argue. |
