The custody (security) of prisoners is a top priority when compared to treatment (rehabilitation). What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages of treatment versus custody? Do you believe the low priority of rehabilitation for prisoners is justified when compared to the high priority of prison security?

I am a Corrections Officer in a max prison. Security is my main goal and absolute top priority above all else. Yes, rehabilitation is also part of the mission statement, but we also have professionals here who do nothing but work in the rehabilitative classes and programs. We have elective programs, mandatory programs, educational programs and professional licensing programs all geared toward reducing the recidivism rate that is currently going straight through the roof.
Correctional staff is also concerned with rehabilitative therapies and dealing with these issues as it pertains to other departments and interdepartmental cooperation, but my primary function is security and maintaining the physical welfare of the inmates.
I honestly do not see any advantages or disadvantages here. Each item is separated from the other but tied together as a functioning whole with each department working together.

Let's face it, security needs to be job one. But I have been inside and let me tell you, a lot of what they do is redundant to the extreme. Most of it is so the deputies do not have to do anything except sit on their butts and push buttons.
You have been caught in the trap that most of them are called departments of corrections. WRONG!!! Department of detention is much less attractive, but much more accurate.
They are truly NOT interested in all that much rehabilitation. What in the heck are they going to do with that facility if they do not get their fair share of repeat offenders?
Your police department's budget increases every year. What in the heck business do they have STOPPING crime? Control it to an acceptable level, like Jean Francois Kerry said we should do about Terrorism. |
