I'm 17 and still in high school,
what steps do I need to take to have this be my.. well, career?
I know a high school diploma, but how would I apply for something like this.. and training?

Finish high school.
Apply at a community college for a 2 year degree in criminal justice.
Get into shape, or stay in shape if you are already there. You will be required to do a series of push-ups, pull-ups, sit-ups, and a timed 2 mile run to get into the police academy.
Apply with a police department.
Apply with a police academy after the college.
Stay clean and sober.
You can volunteer at a local police department to get some first hand knowledge of the department. This helps put you over other applicants.
Or you can join the armed forces. Military experience is a plus in law enforcement.

It is becoming more and more common for any police dept to require 2 years of college before they will consider hiring you for the police force. Check with a community college and see about an associates degree in Criminal Justice. |

Contact your local departments and see if they have any volunteer programs that you could sign up for... It may be grunt work and you might not like it but it will allow you to network locally with the people within the department
A high school diploma really isn't cutting it now a days unless you got a minimum of 60 college credits or a military background departments really don't even consider you for employment as there are to many more qualified candidates out there
