my personal experience ? ... I became a stronger person ... and have friends outside of Law Enforcement contrary to popular belief .. we're people just like everyone else ! .. the academy is going to be both mentally and physically trying they make it that way to test who's "heart" is really in it ! I don't know of any classes in high school that you have to have to go to the academy in Texas ..(not sure where you are ! ) pay and benefits vary like you said - smaller department USUALLY pay less for obvious reasons but usually have comparable benefits - GOOD LUCK .. !

Most places you will need an Associates Degree (2 years college) or military experience.

You might want to work on spelling to get higher marks on the tests.

In order to go the academy you would first need to be hired by a department. You would go through a fairly rigourous process prior to being hired.

First, you would have to pass a written exam, pass a physical which would consist of: push ups/sit ups/running, the minimum requirements vary by age.

Once you passed that, you would have to pass a background investigation, polygraph, medical physical, and physhological test and then an interview with the chief.

The academy is sort of like boot camp, but its not too bad.

You may consider paying attention in your current english class so you can write an intelligent sentence with the proper use of words and syntax. many Police exams will test you on your ability to read and write an intelligent sentence.

Man, look at your spelling....and that is with a spell checker available. What is your reason for wanting to become a police officer? You realize you would have to apply yourself. Just going by the way you write, I would guess you would don't apply yourself to learning. There is a great deal more to being a police officer then wearing a uniform and a pistol and riding in a patrol car.

Bottom line is that you have to be fair and tough, and have a great intuition about people so as not to arrest the wrong guy...seen it happen.

All I have to say is that if you plan on joining because of pay and benefits, then don't do it because you'll end up being a jelly donut eating loser who'll never get anywhere in life. However, if you really want to serve and help people, then you should join because you'll be doing what you like to do and you'll gain the respect of other people. So, think hard about whether or not this is something that you really want to do. There are other options out there. You should take a look at them.

I can't see being a cop. You don't get paid enough for the job to be done. You could be shot and killed on any given shift you work. Just not worth it to me.

It's a very personal choice. Being an officer requires MUCH physical and mental stamina and strength. Many officers develop drug and alcohol abuse problems due to the stresses of the job, even if they are fully qualified.

The academy is meant to teach you what you need to know, not to fail you, and many academies will work with you to help you pass and learn everything you need to know.

Getting an offer of employment from a department is the hardest step, you will have background checks done, reference checks, psychological testing, and many interviews.
