Just to clarify..."mike i" is absolutely INCORRECT !! you DO NOT need an associates degree to become a NYC police officer, just 60 credits from an accredited college/university even if you don't have a degree. you DO NOT submit to a polygraph exam. you DO NOT have to live in NYC, you can be a resident of the 5 boroughs and the surrounding counties in the state. you DO NOT have to have a bachelors degree or take a test to become a detective of any kind whether it be in the general service squad or in homicide, those promotions are appointed by the police commissioner. |

I'm nypd. first you need at least 2 years of college. adding a few years of military doesnt hurt. then you need to apply, take the test...then pass the background check. if you get hired you go through a 6 month academy. then you do your 1st 2 years as a beat cop. if you do an exceptional job as a cop you will then get details. Ie, anti-crime, narcotics, etc. after a few years of that you should make detective. If you kiss the right butt and play the political game the right way. then after being a detective for a while you can apply to the homicide detail.

I saw a copy of the requirements.
I know you must live in NY City
And i believe you must also have atleast an Associates Degree.
And you also much pass a Polygraph test i believe.
But that's for NYPD...not detective.
Usually detectives require a bachelors degree in criminal justice or criminal investigations or accounting.
They vary and change from state to state.
Theres plenty more requirements, but those are a few that im posstive on.
New Jersey state police doesn't have the poly test, but NY does. |
