Today i was going to my house at lunch during school with my girlfriend and i got pulled over?

i turned right without stopping at the red light first.
im 17 provisional, and i have 4 more months until my provisional license is up (i live in california).
i got a clean record and never got pulled over before. he asked me if i knew that i cant drive people i was like "yeah deputy, i know..." then he told me that my turn was unsafe and could of caused an accident. then he asked me if i go to school and i said yeah i go to _____ high school and im on my lunch. he said yeah he seen me around the school, since he's a campus resource officer as well. for the sheriffs department.
then he told me that he wasnt going to raise my insurance and get money out of my pocket at such a young age, told me to drive safe and not to drive passengers anymore. i thanked him and drove home.
i feel bad though, because i never usually do stupid stuff like that, and the one time i did, i got pulled over. when i see the cop again around school, should i thank him again?

Smile, say hello, and carry on your business. He gave you a break, feel lucky. You don't have to kiss his butt. Just learn from it. |

No. If you see him, just give him a nod of acknowledgement and respect...like he showed to you by letting you off. And don't tell anyone about this. Good cops like him with an ounce of compassion and judgement are few and far between...don't make waves for him by letting anyone even THINK he didn't do his job...because in my book...he DID. |

If you see him again, I'd give him a thank you... After that I'd leave it alone. However, I'd scold your English teacher. |

yes i would still thank him for only giviung a warning
it never hurts
I remember one incident where this CHP pull over some students
because they were not wearing their seat belts
they got a ticket and the officer made sure they had their seats belts
fasten
about a hour later that same CHP officer responded to a roll over
accident
it was the same students he just sited but they were uninjured
and alive!
(those students thanked that officer again for citing them
(and i think they paid their tickets too!) |

The best way that you can thank the Police Officer if follow his recommendations exactly to the letter.
If you were to thank him in person you might create an awkward situation for him.
This is especially true if he has to give someone else a ticket.
If it becomes known that he gave you a break but did not give someone else a break, it could make life awkward for him.
Also, since he is a campus resource officer, you could mention to other students that he is very fair, but do not give them the idea that he might give them a break.
You might also drop some hints that it is very important to support the Police and create support among other students for The Police.
What you want to do is help improve the behavior of other students, to make the Police Officer's life easier, without raising the expectations of other students that he might give them a break. |

just keep your nose clean, don't do it again and learn from it, you got a break as he felt you weren't a troublemaker probably. |

The officer NEVER raises your insurance. It sounds like he let you off with a verbal warning which won't show an your record when the insurance checks.
As for thanking him again, I agree that you should just drop the issue. |

Ack. You've made so many mistakes here....
We all make mistakes. That's life. But, you never, EVER answer any question asked you by a police officer. You provide your name. If driving, you are required to provide a drivers license, car registration and proof of insurance. Pretty much any question they ask can be distilled down to "do you admit to doing something illegal?" Never admit to anything. Period.
You got off REALLY lucky. You owe him, and should just say thank you for using his discretion, and that you appreciate that he cut you a break. |
