Too Many People In Prison?
Find answers to your legal question.

Too Many People In Prison?

I spent 6 months in prison and it was such a waste of time and money. I was in for assault (ABH) but I didn't think it was the right sentence but there was nothing I could do about that.

If some one gets a sentence would it not be better to serve your sentence by working from 8-5 or whatever on projects that are of use to the community and then go home at night even have a curfew for some of this time. I was released on tag at the end of my sentence and it's still a real punishment as you really want to go out because you are free eventhough you know you can't.

This way you'd still be earning money, be with your family and there wouldn't be so many people in prison and it would cost less and useful jobs would be done.

I think in years to come that people will be shocked at the fact that so many people got locked up for relatively minor crimes and these should be dealt with in better ways. It would also make sure that there is enough places in prisons for the serious criminals.
Additional Details
No it wasn't my first offence - but first 'serious' one. I had been done before for drink driving and for criminal damage.

Prison is a huge industry in America.

PAMELA R
chain gangs might work better than that, doubt you would go back twice

Barbara Doll to you
It's not just a punishment it's supposed to be a deterrent also.

I believe in doing the time when you commit the (felony) crime. However, the US has something like 2% of it's population in prison, which doesn't sound like much to many people but, statistically in comparison to other countries, it IS.

Now, the throw-away-the-key types will tell you that this is because "America is Number 1! USA! USA!" and we don't coddle criminals.

I counter by asking why we have so many criminals to begin with when other industrialized democratic countries with lower incarceration rates are statistically safer places to be.

I guess what you're really asking about is whether prison if for punishment or for rehabilitation. I say the we should be rehabilitating. The common historical name, "House of CORRECTIONS", says exactly what prison is supposed to be for. Even Sen. Sam Brownback - ultra-conservative Kansan and candidate for President - has made prisoner rehabilitation a cornerstone of his personal faith and community service and has introduced the theme into his campaign.

Good luck to you - I hope you're flying right.

You're right! We need to solve this by using capital punishment a lot more.

i agreed with you until you started to try and justify your sentence by saying"i didnt think it was the right sentence" yes there are a lot of petty crimes but physically hurting someone isnt one of them. the idea of prisons is for 1 reason only-to protect the public and its looks as if this is what the judge ordered.

AMybe there's too many dyslexics and disadvantaged in prison - that's doesn't mean the justice system is failing - that measn the education system failed them.

You should have been on intervention programmes whilst in prison and later probation but because your sentence was short (less than 12mths) then by the time people have you on their radar for interventions your out.

6 months for assualt - how much damage did you do to your victim.

You did a society has made illegal - what did you expect ? a yellow card? It's meant to be a punishment - BUT it's alos meant to be an opportunity for the system to have a go at correcting your attitude to your crime to reduce the risk of your doing it again. The job or prison is to protect socitey from you - Now and in the future. Clearly they only had partial success in your case.

I'd rather have more people in prison than more people in fear.

There are two main points of imprisonment in the US.

First is to punish you by taking your most sacred right away, your freedom.

The second is to protect the public from the offenders.

So, in your case, you were in for reason one. For the true evil people, they are in for reason two.

sarah1962
maybe you are right, but abh is a serious charge,so i think it was right to sent you to prison, do the crime, do the time, i was a victim of a serious abh charge, it is not nice, all the best

Kill the ones that are on death row. Kill the child molesters. They take up too much space and $$. That should make a little more room.

vdv_desantnik
and what gives you the right to decide what sentences are handed out? With your past history you obviously havent learned anything, so maybe now youve been to prison you will think about your actions and the consequences next time

Luvfactory
You seem like a reasonable chap, even though you've been found guilty (for which you still doing your time by having to obey a cerfew). Well, why not put your experience and your common sense into good use and see if you can get involved with probation, rehabilitation etc. working for the social services etc.? You could put your ideas into good use and who knows in a few years' time you could be the leader of one of these projects? Good luck, and keep out of trouble.

You did the crime so do the time. Was this your first offence? What about the victim? Would you turn up to do the work as most people would not and do not turn up for community service already.

I'm sure the person you assaulted would disagree.

Prison is supposed to be a deterrant. Why would we want criminals serving the community with the opportunity there to commit more crime. Why would we want more people on curfew when we already have so many people breaching curfews.

If you are under lock and key then the public can rest assured that they are safe from you or any other convicted criminal for that length of time.

If you ask me, build more prisons and make people serve what they have been sentenced to and not half (what a joke). Prison should not be an easy ride.

If you don't like it then I suggest you keep your nose clean!

The big problem with British gaols is that the prison regime is far too soft and easy going. Prisoners are allowed to wear their own clothes instead of uniform, have television & radio in their cells, have excellent welfare facilities, access to high quality gymn & leisure facilities which in many cases are better than our schools have.
It's no wonder so many re-offend as there is nothing to fear from going to gaol.
Prisoners should be made to work hard for their keep. There are plenty of jobs which are perfectly suitable for prison work gangs to carry out. Digging out silted up reservoirs would help to increase our drinking water capacity and stave off hose pipe bans, cleaning graffitti from buildings, picking litter, cleaning up chewing gum from footpaths, road building & maintenance, the list is almost endless & most are jobs that are not getting done because cash strapped authorities cant afford the labour cost.
We have thousands of pairs of idle hands locked away at great expense to the tax payer.
If prisoners were forced to graft while in gaol they may be less inclined to make a repeat visit.

You had an interview for a pre-sentence report didn't you? What did the officer propose? Who was the victim?

If it was anything other than a community penalty then I'm inclined to think that either you are understating the seriousness of the offence, that you made it clear that you wouldn't comply with a community order or that the risk you presented to the community was too high.

pinkribbon
Lots of British prisons are Victorian buildings.Small and cramped.I have a friend that was a prison warder in Kent.
Maybe you have a good point there.

quierounvaquero
I agree with you, Paul.

It's surpring that the UK's prison population is increasing, and has exceeded 80,000, while the rate of reported and recorded crime has been decreasing over the past decade. That is a fact.

Most of the people that get locked up are also menally ill and need help, or have been failed by the system in some way. I think it is appalling how people talk about prisons - they think tvs should be scrapped etc - I find some people are quite sadistic when it comes to prison
I believe in mst cases prison should be a last resort for inexcusable behaviour - I think fines and commnity service orders are much beter for rehabilitation
There is no way you should be in prison unless you are a physical danger to the public. They should just take away your means to commit the crime again

grinslinger
NO! You do the crime, then do the time. I think we should build more and bigger prisons. That would stop over crowding and get the criminals off the street.
