Transporting Prisoners - Is security too tight just for the sake of it?

When I was getting transferred to jail I was in 'full restraints' - handcuffs, leg shackles, bellychain and box over handcuffs. I don't see how anybody could ever escape if they were even just had the handcuffs and leg irons.
Why do they make people out so bad even if it's not a major crime - I was in for theft/robbery. I can sort of understand it for a really serious crime like murder or something like that but it seems over the top for less serious crimes.

One thing officers have to do is make sure that there are no escapes or incidents. They deal with real bad people who will stop at nothing to escape sometimes but there is no way to know which ones they are so they have to take precautions on all their prisoners to protect the public and cover their own but. You were just one of the bad guys that day. |

Your definition of a major crime is different to mine.
You might not think it is major, but what about the victim, who's been robbed? It makes me sick when I hear villains bleating about their rights.
Those who commit crime are scum, and should be treated at such. No excuses. |

What you did was serious. Get over it. If you don't want to be shackled don't break the law. |

Quit your crying! If you weren't such a Piece of $h!t in society... then you wouldn't be here on yahoo answers asking such dumb questions and crying about how you were all tied up while they were transporting you! |

Maybe. Afraid to say that there have been a number of really silly escapes in recent years. So I guess they aren't wanting to take risks. It does go with the territory. You know the saying.... |

You may be the nicest guy in the world but you are still in witth folks that really belong there so you will get shackled like every one else. hope you dont go back |

What would be your recommendation??? Keep in mind that many times the officers are mvoing many inmates with minimal officers, so those are the breaks. Its a policy, no matter the offense, a criminal is a criminal........ |

this is done because if you do a runner the escorting company is fined a £1000.00 FOR YOUR ESCAPE AND £500.00 A DAY YOUR ON THE RUN UNTILL YOU ARE CAUGHT |

Anyone is capable of anything if they feel hopeless enough, including someone in for a, other than capitol offense. You know you won't do anything but how do the C.O.'s know that?
Security of any kind can never be TOO tight. |

Officers are killed and injured every year by people who are just really nice folks who should be treated better and not handcuffed like common criminals. They don't know you and they have no reason to trust you with their lives. You are shackled and cuffed because thats the policy and it works better than being stupid and thinking that this guy only commits crimes against others and would not hurt me. |

Because everyone needs to get treated the same. Otherwise it would look racist. See, generally speaking, there is a higher percentage of minorities committing the 7 major felonies. Murder, Rape, Robbery, Assault, Burglary, Grand Larceny, Grand Larceny Auto. These crimes would require the high security. Now, whites are more prone to the so called, "white collar" collar crime. These crimes are not violent and usually aren't against a specific person. Like insurance fraud. Could you imagine the talk that although they're both felonies only the minority is usually in chains, while the white guy is only in cuffs? Therefore, to make it easy, EVERYBODY gets full chains, therefore noone is treated any better than another. Be it, violent crime or non-violent. Does that help? |

I feel safer when I see a prisoner being transported in the full cuffs and chains. Did you hear what happened in Atlanta a couple of years ago? People who are going to prison can become desperate and will do anything to escape. But then again I live in the Tampa Bay area where we have had several instances of prisoners killing police officers and others to try to get out of going to prison. |

As an Ex-MP Sgt. I have done more prisoner transports than i can remember and I always thought the military had it's crap together on this one. Prisoners were handcuffed in the front, no leg chains and before we left I'd tell them the rules. "I have been issued a .45 cal pistol with 3 clips of ammo. If you choose to run or try to escape I have been fully authorized to shoot you but I also have been instructed to fire one shot over your head if you try and escape. The problem is, they did not instruct me as to when I must fire this shot, before or after I shoot you for trying. So just to be on the safe side, you better not try and run or escape. I never had any prisoner test this theory. |

Because safety is paramount, we really don't care if your pride is hurt. Just because you ONLY committed a retail theft does not mean you are not a risk to us or anyone else is on a transport. I have seen Sheriff's transport 25 guys at one time only two officers, I don't like those odds, so the more security the better. Plus it protects your stupid a$$ from the other prisoners. |

I know, those 'sweatboxes' are a nightmare, especially when I was being transported in the little titchy 'cell' at the back when the idiots from Premier didn't know where they were going and I ended up being banged around like hell every time they made a sharp turn. Bring back the simple bus and handcuff routine. |

Here in Spain its handcuffs all the way...each time you leave the prison, court, hospital etc, handcuffs that don't get taken off and while in transit, one is locked in a tiny cubicle, I think it is a little over the top and each case should be on its merits, obviously if the person is dangerous or accused of certain crimes then they should be applied, I was in there for selling a replacement tax document, perfectly legal in the UK, yet handcuffed everytime I left the jail, I have never been actually charged with anything and it took me 6 months to get out. Locked inside the little cubicle, handcuffed, to me is exceedingly dangerous indeed, especially on the roads of Spain |

Sounds like total overkill to me and worse, we appear to be picking up these appalling traits from America. The Police often close off the main roads causing unnecessary chaos. |
