Under 18, got caught stealing?

Under 18, got caught stealing?

My friend is 15 years old, and he got caught steal from Walmart. It all cost $10-40 and he was given two tickets. He has to go to court twice and get fingerprinted. I really want to help him with this and comfort him, because he's really worried.

What might the consequences for him be?
Approximately how much would the fine be?
Is it possible to just get community service?
How can he reduce his punishment or fine?

Thank you for taking the time to read and/or answer this. (:

Well i doubt he is going to jail. No judge in there right mind will place a 15 year old in jail for a minor shoplifting incident.

He most likely will get fined, placed on probation/assigned community service, and will be banned from walmart for a year, and this will stay in his record for several years.

Not sure for the fine though.

If you want to help him let him take the consequences & maybe he'll learn not to be that stupid again.

If he stole from YOU, is that what you'd do, comfort him?

Goes on his permanent record. The cost of the tickets too of course. My friend stole when he was 15 and ended up having to do community service over his summer break.

Depending on where you live, he might be given some kind of diversionary program if he has never been in trouble before. In a diversionary program, he would typically have to agree to stay out of the store and would have to stay out of trouble for a certain length of time, perhaps pay a fine or do some community service. If he does everything he is supposed to, the charges could be dismissed.

He also might be given the opportunity to plead guilty to something less than shoplifting, such as criminal trespass.

He should have a lawyer represent him in court so he can get the best result possible. A juvenile adjudication is not a criminal conviction, so if he is ever asked on a job application if he's been convicted of a crime, he can truthfully say no. It WILL stay on his record, at least for awhile. After a certain length of time (usually a few years), most states allow juvenile records to be expunged (erased).

The best thing your friend can do for himself is to resolve never to do anything so stupid and wrong again. He should also make sure he isn't hanging out with friends who commit offenses--it is very easy to get in trouble merely because you are with somebody else who decides to get into a fight or smoke dope in the car.

This doesn't have to ruin your friend's life if he smartens up starting NOW.

Consequences: He could go to jail for up to a year, if the judge gives him the maxs hes allowed to.

Fines: Could get as high as 1,000 for each item stole from the store. Or maybe the 1,000 is what the totaly fine will be. Again it depends on the amount the judge decides.

Community Service: Up to 100 hours, but most of the time you wont get just that. It usually comes with the fine.

Reduce his punishment: He may not be able to. But I did hear about a program that is allowing people to work off the money they owe to the company. He might be able to look into that. It was on the news. The girl joined a military program or something and she is working off the money she stole from the store she worked for. She had stolen over a 1,000 dollars worth of stuff from this store over the course of a year. He could ask about that.

And Firebird is right, it will go on his prement record and it may make it harder to get a job when he gets older. Especially one that deals with money.
