Under what conditions do police officers get take-home cars?

It can either be in general,or where you live.

State police and county sheriff departments frequently have take home cars because of the large area they cover. It is not practical for every one to report to a central location to get a car.

City departments rarely allow take home cars for patrol, as it is not cost effective. They use the same car for all shifts, you are assigned one when you begin your day.

There is one city PD in my area that allows take home cars for some officers. They are even allowed to run personal errands in them. The theory is the visibility of extra patrol cars is a deterrent. However, the officers are required to stop if they are flagged down or come across an accident, and the first 10 hours of overtime per month are not compensated. That is a sacrifice you make for getting a car to take home.

Some departments offer take home squads for officers - many county and state police departments do. While the costs are high if an agency is about to start a program, it is cheaper in the long run. If an agency does not offer take home cars, you probably have to be in high rank or in certain specialty positions to get one. I have a take home car, I run our detective unit.
