My sister and brother in law live on a moderately busy street on a corner lot. They have a nice yard and quite a bit of money has been spent on landscaping. Every month or two, late at night people come through in a truck and do donuts in their yard. They usually wait until their yard has been recently mowed and it has rained recently so the ground is wet. This really tears up the yard. It looks like trenches have been dug in the yard when they finish.
I half-joking suggested some sort of chain with spikes that would blow the tires out of the truck. I have no idea about the legality of this, but I was afraid their might be some sort of legal repercussions. I would like some serious suggestions on how this problem might be taken care of though. Any advice from a legal or law enforcement perspective would be appreciated.

He needs to buy himself a dozen of those Hard-yard rakes..buy some heavy duty ones. Lay them in the yard..spike side up when the conditions are right for your Vandals to strike.Not against any laws to have a yard rake in a yard now is there..who knows maybe one of them might even rise up to smack him a good one!! |

You have described a very common problem. A good solution is to place 1-foot-high rocks along the perimeter of the yard. Space them out with one every 5 or 6 feet. Paint the rocks white for decoration if you like.
The rocks will deter vandals because anyone attempting to drive over them will damage the undercarriage of their vehicle.
This is a simple, cheap, easy, and perfectly legal solution. |
